It was more than one day, it started August 25, but it wasn't widely known until August 29.

I was finally able to get Vista going after a third attempt. The only problem now is that it seems to stall from between 5 (and sometime more) seconds almost each time I press a button/link anywhere. This was a similar problem on the Vista Beta, which I played with stopping a few services that seemed to help but I don't know for sure which ones. Any reason why this happens as in which service might be doing this and help on how I can stop this from happening?

Does that happen anywhere on Windows or is only in a specific program?

Sometimes, when things like that happen, its because Windows is trying to access some part of the registry and it does exist or it has no permissions.

The stalling happens in Windows. For example, when I click on a control panel item, dialog box button, etc. virutally everything. Should I record it on camera to demonstrate?

There is no need, I understand it now.

I will try to find out what could be the problem.

I tried to replicate exactly what you did on the video, and noticed that when opening the "Fonts" folder, in my case, the list started to appear immediately, and the progress bar was "filling" to show that the computer was accessing the disk.

On your video I didn't saw the green progress bar appear, so I think it may be a problem with your disk.

Have you seen in the "Device Manager" if everything is OK?

If you have an IDE disk see in the "Device Manager", under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers", the properties of the ATA channels, to see if they appear as "Ultra DMA".



I have seen some people saying that "User Account Control" sometimes delays some operations. You can try to disable it to see if this is your case.

Go to "Control Panel", "User Accounts", and click on "Turn User Account Control on or off", and after that uncheck the box that says "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer".

You will be asked to reboot, and after that those messages asking for confirmation of possibly dangerous actions should have disappeared. See if you still have the delay problem with (UAC) turned off.

I'm on it right now. And it's a breeze, very impressive. Beta 2 had that air of sluggishness but this build is actually just as swift as XP from what I've toyed with so far. No crashes, no funny stuff. Instantaneous loading of windows and apps. Aero animations are smooth as butter. This is actually really good. For those of us following the Betas, Vista is improving. Shaping up to be pretty good. Also, it was one of the quickest Windows installs I've ever done. Very impressive.

They've brought back the Windows Switcher on the taskbar! Nice touch. Windows Media Player 11 and Photo Gallery load straight away, no lag or stuttering whatsoever unlike the last Beta. Also cleaning up the gui in a nice way - an active fullscreen window is now a pure black colour rather than that dark-grey it used to be - looks very clean and nice. And wow, i don't believe it (looking at the list of updates it carried out on installation) Vista automatically installed new drivers for my obscure 6-year-old video capture card - wow it took ages to get XP drivers for this thing, so this is frankly quite a shock for me

The one and only thing that needs to be tidied up is the gaming side of things. 88.61 didn't work on build 5536. But my OpenGL games like Doom 3, Quake 4, Prey etc worked fine on Beta 2. Prey was a bit laggy but Doom 3 still hit the magical 60fps ceiling even with the Extreme Quality mod. I'm praying RC1 will have proper OpenGL game support, it would be the icing on the cake!

Just an update on my Vista experience, now running build 5600. The temporary freezing and stalling that I was experiencing was a result of the Realtek '97 audio drivers, as I have discovered. Even the Realtek Vista beta audio drivers are not 100%. Now, Vista works fine with the audio drivers disabled.

Hi guys, I am running vista on two of my machines and finding it very good so far (better than the absymal beta 2 anyway!).

My main pc has fairly decent hardware, but I can see that I am going to need to upgrade soon to get the best out of vista, my poor CPU only gets a score of 3.7 in the windows experience index.

I was wondering what hardware you guys are running and what scores your machines are getting (i.e. will a conroe extreme edition get a 5+ for calculations per second?)

I run a Pentium 4 630 (3.0ghz HT), with 2gigs of DDR 400, an ATI x1600 512mb graphics card, Asus P5GD-VM mobo, and a 160gb SATA 2 seagate HDD and get the following results:

I am really interested if there are any subnotebooks that can run Aero (Vaio TX3 or Flybook style machines), as it will soon be time to change my old V505! My desktop feels the pain from vista sometimes, so it would be interesting to see what other chips do for vista!

OK, now I can post what I wanted.

My computer:
Athlon 1900+ 1600Mhz
512 MB RAM
GeForce 2 MX400

My computer's rating is:
CPU: 2.9

Graphics: 1.9

When I used a GeForce FX5500 with 128MB (I think) for some minutes, the results were:
CPU: 2.9
Memory: 2.9
Graphics: 2.6
Gamming graphics: 2.6
Hard disk: 5.1

During that time I used Aero scheme and I noticed a slight drop in performance.

Just wanted to tell people that you can still download Vista...from Microsofts Vista page.

I installed it yesterday...So far no real problems. The only thing that didn't work was the internet...But once I found and installed the RealTek Ethernet Driver....It was golden.

t has a good look to it...and runs nice and fast. my specs are 2.2 ghz, 512mb ram, 64mb video card. And I didn't do a fresh install, I had is install over my existing XP.

I plan on buying Vista when it comes out...I'll get the Ultimate one...Hopefully it will run good....My main PC (the one I'm using now) is a 3 ghz, 1gb ram, 128mb video card. I might stick with what I have for awhile, But if Vista runs a little sluggish I'll get a new motherboard & Video Card and Processor...But since That will cost around $600 or so...I'm hoping she holds up well.
