As I'm reading a post, I notice this ad off to the right side of the screen:

Utah - Political Party
Looking for Political Party in Utah? Find it here!
www.local.com

And I just happen to be in Utah. This ad was no accident. There is a lot of "target marketing" going on here.

I'm not sure that I can ever fully trust any of the moderators, ect. on this website...

It leaves me to ask: "Who owns this website?"

Did that ad happen to be in the "ads by GOOGLE.." frame?

The ads by GOOGLE target keywords on the page that you are on. If you remove Utah from your location, chances are that you won't see that ad anymore, unless you refer to Utah in your post, or someone else does on the thread....

Well I got the same thing, different state of course, and my location isn't listed.

I believe this type of system is more ip address based than anything else.

Quite plausible, but I only know about GOOGLE's use of keyword targeted ads.
