ok, here's my gripe.

when i was 14, i'd hear my dad say the word ''n-word'' and i'd be all up in arms - "don't say that dad, it's horribly offensive!"

when i was 16, i didn't use the word myself, but i could give a damn if anyone else wanted to. it was a word. anyone offended by air waves in any recognizable pattern deserves the stress they derive from it. intent is what's important - i could make jokes all day long using the word, and in all honesty, there would be no true intent to cause anyone any grief. now, a few weeks ago i got knocked out for using the word in a completely innocent manner, albeit i was goading the guy on because i was drunk and tired of the hypocritical BS.

the only reason i refrain from using the term at any point in my day is either professionalism or respect. if i respect the individual enough, i'll respect their wishes. if i don't know the guy from adam, he can kiss my ass.

the next time i hear a black guy call another black guy a racial slur, i'm calling them on their sh. i'm tired of this double standard crap - if i knocked a black guy out for calling me a honky, or a peckerwood, i'd likely spend a night in jail. our society has gotten ridiculous in it's tolerance of peoples enormous egos and even bigger hypocrisies.

Alternatives could have been used.

Ever hear of sticks and stones? He was wrong! Words standing alone do have meaning and can hurt people, regardless of how you hope to have it percieved.

Doesn't seem to innocent.

How about respecting yourself not to use racial slurs, regardless of whose present or how you mean it. Not respecting someone, or not knowing the person is simply not enough to justify using derogatory remarks.

Double standard? Are you insulted that your not able to use these terms?

Seems you have some individual issues that need to be sorted out before you judge society. Did the man who knocked you out spend a night in jail? Did you pursue charges? I'll assume no to both. So how can you fault society for not persecuting this man if you did not take the first step.

because i was well aware of the standard i was being held to because i'm white. i'm not allowed to say the word, but he can? no. that's ridiculous.

i invited him to punch me. had i been sober, and not consumed half my weight in devil-juice, it would have been what i intended, an invitation to 'fight' me (i'm so harcore it hurts, eh?), but my balance and timing were quite off, so i spent a few minutes contemplating the concrete.

i still feel i was 'justified'. my reasoning still stands.

and racial slurs are about the funniest thing in the world, partner, and using them has nothing to do with self respect. if there's no hate behind something, then it's harmless - remove stick 'a' from hole 'b'....

Actually its completely acceptable. I believe its wrong for them to use it on one another because it is a sign of disrespect, IMO. If certain individuals are fine with it, and use it then that is their choice and so be it. Certainly does not make it acceptable for you to use it.

Doesn't make it right.

I'm sure your familiar with symbolism. What something means to you can mean something completely different to another individual. You may believe your removing the hate from whatever your saying, but you can not guarantee how people are going to percieve what your saying. Using racial slurs for no reason at all is a sign of disrespect for yourself. Nobody is asked to speak perfect english, but certain comments are unacceptable. Regardless of who the audience is.

If I am sitting around with five white friends, is it right for me to use slurs for Mexicans? Jews? African-Americans? etc. No. If those being insulted are present or not, its wrong.

Sounds like you got what you deserved.

Yeah ok let us all know how that goes!

if i knocked a black guy out for calling me a honky, or a peckerwood, i'd likely spend a night in jail.

If he pressed charges. Did you press assault charges?

our society has gotten ridiculous in it's tolerance of peoples enormous egos and even bigger hypocrisies.

Its hypocritical to expect people to not use racial slurs??

I mean, its pretty clear that when a black man uses that word, he's not trying to say that blacks are subhumans that should be used as slaves, but anyone else, who knows what the intent is. And you're saying that you were actually 'goading' someone with it. But then complain about getting punched out? Thats hypocritical.

Whats ridiculous is a white guy thinking its perfectly alright to call a black guy that.

i still feel i was 'justified'. my reasoning still stands.

Ok, so everyone's happy. You feel justified, and I am sure that that other guy feels satisfied.

and racial slurs are about the funniest thing in the world, [...] if there's no hate behind something, then it's harmless

You were drunk and messing with a black guy in a bar and throwing racial slurs at him. You find it funny even. There's no hate behind that? Thats supposed to be obvious to everyone observing the event?
If you don't hate people, don't call them racial slurs, especially 'to mess with them'.

Im with the poster on this one!

Im geussing your in the USA im not, im in the UK. I get the impression that if a white guy was to insult a anyone of a different race with a racial motive then the law comes down on you like a ton of bircks.

On the other side of the coin however, if a white guy was abused buy a black guy then its hardly ever treated as racially motivated.

I am of the same mind as the poster when it comes to their being double standards, im not being acist but im getting sick and tired of how everything is so damn politically correct these days. Everyone has to be treated equally but those from minorities more equal than the rest of us.

RaNt OvEr!1!

go ahead and bash me for my sentiments, but think about it - if you see a black comedian call someone in the audience a 'cracker'. 'peckerwood'. or 'whitey', i bet you don't even bat an eye. a white comedian using a racial slur? OMGCALLTHECOPS.

even if you're one of those people who feel comedians can get away with anything, look at 15 year olds. the same thing holds true.
