As HAL - the onboard computer that became "insane" and tried to destroy the crew in 2001 A Space Odessey - was being created for the film, did Kubrick deliberately invent the name HAL as a link to the new and upcoming (at that time) computer megalith of IBM?
I mean if you add the next letter along to each of the 3 letters of HAL - what do you get.......

The name HAL is an amalgam of "heuristic" and "algorithmic," the two main processes of learning. Very interesting correlation however!
