UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The UN Security Council has ordered Iran to halt its controversial nuclear activities by August 31 or face the threat of sanctions.

The resolution, passed Monday by 14-1 vote with Qatar in opposition, was immediately rejected by Iran.

Well it looks like the diplomatic route is going to fail and Iran is heading for a showdown with majority of the world. It's a shame that so many innocent Iranians are going to die because of a few crazy religious nutjobs.

So where are all the 'Iran is innocent' crowd?

The only thing I surmize from this is Iran is being bullied - and is holding its ground. What about that news suggests they are a guilty party?

On google news there is written that the resolution doesn't have sanctions included , only some small punishments. Military actions are certainly NOT accepted , especially by China and Russia

It makes me sick.
People on here who STILL rant and rave that Iran has the right to create NUCLEAR energy.

He's not even responsible enough to TALK nice about other countries, let alone bomb them.
If he was really about peace, he wouldnt be spouting this rhetoric.

the UN should put it to Iran,

If you want nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, you will have no problems with becoming a key member in defusing the middle east crisis, disarming hezbollah, restricting militia movements around isarel, and pushing neighboring arab states to join together with israel.

If you do this, and prove to the world you wont use nuclear weapons against israel, then the international community should take a leap of faith and trust them.
But when they scream death to isarel, when they continually aid hezbollah, send in men through syria, and accuse the west of being evil, then they arent going to win the right to nuclear energy.

and you know what, im pretty sure they know this already.

Provide Aid?
Create international awareness?

Dont be so quick to dismiss the UN just because they arent as GUN HO as America/Israel.

I admit the UN doesnt have much ability to stop things such as this.. but short of all out military conflict WHO DOES?

Israel isnt listening to ANYONE, and EVERYONES condemming there actions.
So just because the UN cant pursuade, you think they shoudl be dismissed?

Tis an immature concept from an immature mind to believe the UN is useless.

Anything that strives for PEACE, and CO-OPERATION on planet earth is worth its weight in gold.

Guns and action are not always the answer,
and when they are... you still need the voice of reason on the sidelines.

Looks like Iran provided the very predictable response....

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday rejected a U.N. Security Council resolution that would give his nation until August 31 to suspend uranium enrichment.

Instead, Ahmadinejad insisted Tehran would pursue its nuclear program.

"My words are the words of the Iranian nation. Throughout Iran, there is one slogan: "The Iranian nation considers the peaceful use of nuclear fuel production technology its right," Ahmadinejad said.

www.cnn.com...

I'm just curious if the Iranian posters here have memorized that somewhat long slogan....why not something like "SCREW U...N"?

im just curious why should Iran care what the united nations says? or does
in the long Run its not like anyother nation (just a few) that actuily follow the rules.

heck if the UN doesnt suit a certain country they just tell them to **** them selves
wont say which country

I don't think we say it like that, more along the lines of the UN being ineffective and that we're going to take unilateral action, in essence the same thing I guess, just a little more nicely worded.

Not even the US is questioning the right of Iran to have nuclear energy. International laws at times may seem inconvenient but they are there for a reason. Fourth article of the NPT:

"Nothing in this Treaty shall be interpreted as affecting the inalienable right of all the Parties to the Treaty to develop research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes"

By "he" are you referring to Ahmadinejad? Because he has no control over Iran's nuclear policy. The nuclear issues are handled by Supreme National Security Council, which answers to Khamenei.

Was Iran ever given a chance to defuse the situation? What was the Iranian Foreign Minister's stance in Rome last week? Was he even invited? You can't ask Iran to be a key player while doing everything in your power to isolate it.

"Win the right to nuclear energy"? Are we back in the age of colonialism? Peaceful use of nuclear energy is the right of every nation that has signed the NPT. The act of signing is all that is needed to have access to nuclear energy. No where in the NPT does it say that in order to advance technologically, your foreign policies must be in line with those of the US or Israel. Nowhere does it state that you have to be considered an ally of the west in order to have access to nuclear energy. It is also worth noting, that the US’s recent agreements with India, does not exactly leave it in a position to criticize others for breaking international law.

And finally, does anyone have the statement of the Iranian representative to the UN defending Iran's right before the vote was taken? Since in any court of law the defendants should be given the right to defend themselves before a sentence is given I was wondering if Iran was given the same opportunity? To make your search easier Iran's representative's name is Dr Javad Zarif.

I would consider it peaceful, civilian nuclear research if it wasnt hidden away for how many DECADES? prior to the current escelation?
IF It was for peaceful use, they would of been able to accept the various different deals given to them. They have VAST supplies of energy producing means already, why go along with such an expensive, technical project that clearly the INTERNATIOANL Community isnt happy with? why risk sanctions if all you want is peaceful circumstances?

IF this man cannot even talk nice about his neighbours, if he cannot see for himself that his comments are STIRRING the international opinion of his nuclear energy he should have no business standing on that podium.
A civilised democractic populus, who is chasing something that international unity DOESNT want to give, would usually TOW the line, would usually accept that there are people in the world whom arent his best friends, he should tone down, maybe work a PEACEFUL and CIVILISED DISCUSSION With this group, instead of calling for there destruction.
HE doesnt have control for sure, but when its the international community pushing to have sanctions, and pushing to deny them the right of nuclear energy then he should be trying to win them over, by showing his credentials, his countries ambitions and his counties place in PEACE on planet earth.
He clearly, is PURPOSFULLY doing anything but.

Iran doesnt need to be invited to these talks, his past record of blind rhetoric at previous conferences probably dictates his further absence. You and I both know he has a lot of string pulling aspects oging on with hezbollah,
the aid? he says is simply medical and MORAL? how does one give moral aid to a military faction fighting his SWORN enemy? a pat on the back anda ' gime em ya worst ' rant? c'mon man, Iran could of stopped hezbollah from the let go, they could of influenced syria, and they could of limited the ' volunteers ' from travelling to lebanon.

Again, if your after peaceful nuclear energy you would of accepted another countries deal of enrichment on there property.
WHY DO THE"Y WANT the MATERIAL on there land so badly?
and yes, in a way I feel they have to win the right.
After all, there track record doesnt exactly give the world enough confidence to simply LET them do it ?
When you say
' Israel must be wiped of the map '
at the same time chanting your right to gain a weapon of historical value that can do just that, your not going to win any favours.
Iran have to tow the line, show people there goals and work on it for a bit.
The only peaceful way to win this situation is for IRAN to prove to the world they wont do, what the world half expects them to do, and thats provide this weapon to a terrorist faction.

Im sure they understand this, But they dont want to side with the enemy, because bascially ,that is the enemy they want destroyed.
They know they can get the weapon to do it, either way, and they know the US are in no position to fight a conventional war, they also know the world wont allow the US to conduct a non-convential war.

So they are left with the proposition of
- forcing the US into a bloody economic sapping conflict,
- forcing the US into a globalally UNWANTED and CONDEMED non-conventional war
- forcing the US to sit by, continue the long, drawn out UN diplomatic process which they couldnt really give 2x 5hits for , but ultimately gives them enough time to continue research.

Unfortunately the ball is in Irans court, until specified other wise.
The unfortunate thing about this, is that gives them just enough rope, just enough opportunity to continue there unstated goals, while looking half decent to half the world.

What did GW say?

You only need to fool half the people half the time, and there the ones you need to concentrate on?

I praise Iran, because they've come up with a very savvy way to use Western Ideals and politics against the west.

You naysayers forget that the UN is only asking Iran to halt their nuclear work until the UN can determine whether it is for peaceful purposes. Iran is not even willing to compromise in the least.

IF IT'S FOR PEACE WHY IS IRAN HIDING IT?

If it is for peaceful purposes why was their program hidden for 20 years?

Just found this...is this actually possible and if so, how would they go about increasing the price that much. Wouldn't every other oil producing country have to go along with this as well?

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - Global oil prices could hit $200 per barrel if the United States pursues sanctions against
Iran for its nuclear development program, an Iranian official told Venezuelan state TV on Thursday.

Iran's Foreign Relations Vice Minister Manuchehr Mohammadi said, "The first consequence of these sanctions would be an increase in the price of oil to around $200 per barrel."

The statement comes after the
United Nations on Monday demanded that Iran suspend all nuclear development within a month or face the threat of sanctions.
