Excerpt from the book "1984" by George Orwell- Pg. 2
Behind Winston's back the voice from the telescreen was still babbling away about pig iron and the overfulfillment of the Ninth Three-Year Plan. The
telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a low whisper, would be picked up by it.;
moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course
no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual
wire was guess work. It was even more concievable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in to your wire whenever
they wanted to. You had to live- did live, from habit that became instinct--in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in
darkness, every move scrutinized.
Winston kept his back to the telescreen. It was safer; though, as he well knew, even a back can be revealing...
Takes the fun right outta' porn
But seriously, in this age of "Total Information Awareness", where we become more of a surveilance-society by the year, and technological
advancements increase at an amazingly exponetial rate, this scenerio seems almost inevitable on our present course.
Do such technology exist today- Probably. Is it possible that elements within the Government would abuse such technologies- No doubt. Is such a
program going on as we speak- I highly doubt it (atleast not on a massive scale).
I believe such a program wouldn't begin (if ever) until they had first set up cameras on every street corner, every place of business, all public
transporta. . . wait a minute, almost all those places already have cameras monitoring them. Ahh well, look on the brightside, "We're gonna be on
TV".
