Jews don't accept jesus as the messiah, thats why they remained jews. Muslims accept jesus as a holy prophet, but don't call him the messiah (and
of course don't think he is son of god).
The jews beleived that there'd be a messiah, someone "annointed" by god to be the reddemer of the kingdom of israel, to throw off, through a
military action, foreign occupation, and rule as King. THe jewish messiah was just supposed to be a man.
Jesus came along, and his acolytes said 'the kingdom of god wasn't going to be a physical kingdom, the struggle wasn't going to be a real struggle,
and he redeems because he is god himself'.
The muslims beleive that there will be an end to the world. They beleive that there will be someone called the Mahdi to come about and set the stage
for the end of the world, reforming islam of any acculumated errors, battling evil, and then Jesus, who for them is a holy prophet bested only be
mohammed, will come to earth and bring about the end itself.
The Shia, in particular, think that a particular man, the last of their Imams, called Mohammed Mahdi, is infact the Mahdi. They beleive that he never
died, and went into magical 'occultation' (became hidden). They beleive that at the end of the world, he will un-occult, become visible, and lead
the faithful (and of course jesus plays in on this too). Infact, the Shia beleive that Imam Mohammed Mahdi is still their leader, he went into
occultation, and selects people to act his his communicant and director of the shia, called the "bab", the "Door", or some such.
The OP might infact be spot on. Hezbollah are fundamentalist Shi'ites, their supreme spritual leader should be the grand Ayatollah of Iran. So there
is definitly somethign to be said about them wanting to fight for the Mahdi.
Its' happened before. THe british fought an insurrection of radical terroristic muslim fundamentalists in the Sudan, the leader claimed to be the
Mahdi. al-Sadr, in Iraq, his militia is the Madhi Army, they expect that it is the army that will be commanded by the Mahdi when he un-occults.
I very much doubt, however, that Hezbollah is trying to prevent the Jewish Messiah from comming about, they wouldn't beleive in any jewish
messiah. Besides which, there can't be any jewish messiah. The messiah functions to create the state of Israel. That state already exists. Thus,
there can't be a jewish messiah anytime soon.
Infact, I beleive that this is why the many chasidic jews reject zionism and the modern state of isreal, because it wasn't brought about by the
messiah (or at least then its just like any other worldly state).
