A good and not so expensive hotel in downtown SF in a safe area

Im arriving to SF in a midnight flight. I have to go downtown but a friend of mine that lives there says I have to be careful because it can be dangerous at night. So do you guys know any hotel that I could check in safely at that time thanks?

It's not that it's dangerous, it's that it's that downtown SF is expensive during the week, and there's not much fo availability. You don't have to worry about thugs, I would imagine you'll be taking a shuttle from SFO to downtown. The going rate for one night seems to be $250-$300... San Fran is no town to try and get by on the cheap.
