Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basaev has been killed in Ingushetia. Russian military together with other Russian security services including FSB were
responsible for the attack. Basaev died when truck loaded with explosives blew up beside him. It's unclear if Russian special forces planted the
explosives or was the truck a ready made car bomb waiting to commit an attack against russians.
Four rebel fighthers and two civilians died during the operation. No Russian military casualities were reported.
US President George W Bush's reaction to Basayev's death was: "If he's in fact the person who ordered the killing of children in Beslan, he
deserved it."

This is a remarkable feat by Russian authorities. The Chechen rebel leadership has been in a serious turmoil even before this.
Will this break the back of the Terrorists in Russian Caucasus, most likely not. But will this result more bloody attacks against Russian civilians in
the manner of Beslan and Nord-Ost?
Shamil Basaev
