The carriers have not been cancelled. The project is going through design stages. Of interest is the possible collaboration with the French with an agreement signed in March 06.

There is all sorts going on, with at the periphery proposals to dredge Portsmouth Harbour.

If it moves at the pace of other UK MoD projects you can expect the keel to be laid down sometime in 2050.

ASRAAM, Typhoon, SA80, Foxhunter, Nimrod AEW - all total jokes in terms of their development costs/lifecycle.

Expect the carriers to be waaaay over budget and long overdue before they ever sail.

And, 10 years after the new carriers enter service, the MoD will replace them with something hugely inferior.

Look what the SLR got replaced with....(SA80 if you dont know)

To be fair the SA-80 isnt a bad rifle, its not a really tremendous rifle but neither was the SLR until you inserted a matchtick in the workings. The SLR is a true markmenship rifle because of its calibre, the SA-80 went for the less of the "One shot = bad guy with no back" approach and instead with the "One shot= bad guy taking up 3 other guys time to get him off the battlefield." approach.

Iremember that one, took part in it for a while too! I think thosr Argies were either banned or left in the end.

On topic, last I heard the carrier project was going ahead and they'd start laying down the keel this year/early next.

Damn you both!

Intrigued, I searched out this Invincible thread (I am not a regular on this particular board) and started to read it. FORTY ODD pages of rivetting entertainment! it is now 3.30 am and I have to get up at 7

Damn you again!

the carriers have not been ordered yet, (they have reached the first of a 2 stage main gate approval in jan/feb 2006). Final approval should by the end of the year (thats when they either have to put the money up or cancel it). Currently the design teams are doing detailed design work and finetuning everything, while the french figure out what they want from the design. Although the offical service dates are sill 2012 and 2015, these were originally intended for an early 2005 start date for construction. They are widely held to now be untenable with 2015 and 2018 more likely dates for entering service.

P.s. In the mean time HMS Ark Royal is in the process of leaving refit in Rosyth after an upgrade to enhance communications (inc a third mast same as lusty) and improvement to allow for GR7/9 flights and her use as a commando carrier if needed.

But Waynos, me old sparring partner, at least you got to have a good laugh
.

Incidentally, the reasons the Argies left the thread, was that while were here spouting off, they were busy getting ready to retake the Falklands.

Ooh I was wrecked that day after my three hours sleep! I've recovered now though and yes, it was a brilliantly entertaining thread. I loved the "I'm not answering that because its too hard so I will repeat what I posted five times already"-ness about it

All that about the half built Ark Royal, visibly cocooned in scaffolding, being completed in three months and 'R08' managing to be in two places at once! Great stuff!

Oh god. Please don't remind me. I still have PTSD from that thread.
Those arguments were the most......let's go with "interesting" ones I've had in ages.

I thought the thread was about HMS Invisible being sunk?(!)

Must be true, otherwise all them Argie pilots were fibbing - well the few that made it back!

The gist of the argument fritz was that the Invincible was sunk, and they completed the Ark Royal in 3 months, sailed her to the Falklands, and passed her off as the Invincible.

Zaph, I know that my friend.................. I contributed to the thread a few times myself, thou knows.

I was trying to get a handle on the Ark Royal bit.

IMO the RN should cancel this CVF order and order 1 big aircraft carrier, capable of carrying 85 aircraft, instead, and name it HMS Ramsay.
