Being raised as a good American I did not want to believe that we would somehow falter nor could I even imagine just how we would lose the freedoms we hold so dear.

GEORGIA GOVERNOR SIGNS BILL THAT REQUIRES ALL CDL HOLDERS TO RECEIVE HIGHWAY WATCH® TRAINING
New Bill to Take Effect on July 1, 2006
Smyrna, GA—The Georgia Motor Trucking Association today announced that Governor Sonny Perdue has signed HB 1253 that requires Highway Watch training for all Georgia truck drivers who seek to gain a new Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or prior to renewal for those who currently hold a CDL.

The trucking industry is one of the backbones of the American Economy. Anything purchased or manufactured will at one point be transported on a truck at sometime almost exclusively driven by a CDL holder. Once upon a time the trucker was romanticized as a knight of the open road. Someone to turn to for protection and support when your car broke down or as a provider of shelter when the road was shut down from a snowstorm or other acts of nature.

The Highway Watch Program was revamped and presented to the drivers in the trucking industry as means to help in post-9/11 America by keeping an eye out and informing officials of suspicious activities. The training and direct contact phone numbers were to give the witnessing trucker instant credibility for actions to be taken. This program was always stressed as a voluntary effort for those concerned about the country’s security.

By forcing this, as some would call, amateur spy program as a condition of continued employment and independent business ownership on the people of Georgia, Governor Perdue has set a precedent for the ATA (American Trucking Association) to lobby the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration) to make participation mandatory in holding a CDL. The ATA, despite the name, does nothing to promote individual company drivers nor owner/operators. The ATA is a lobby group for the larger motor carriers. The FMCSA is the regulation and enforcement arm of the US Department of Transportation. Interestingly enough, the Highway Watch Program is fully funded by the US Department of Homeland Security.

My opinion is that the mandatory participation legislation signed by Gov. Perdue is a test for national rollout of what could be compared to the propaganda that was aimed at German children under the Hitler Youth of Nazi Germany in which children were told to report the suspicious activities of their neighbors and their parents.

Curious…legislation that will eliminate both employment and small business ownership if a large segment of the American economy in 1/50th of the states for not participating in a Department of Homeland Security program and no one has a single comment?

Perhaps the perception is that they are just a bunch of greasy truck drivers so who cares?

Perhaps it because people neither realize nor care that these people have to pay $100 each for a federal background check through three separate so they can carry a load of Clorox Bleach to your local Wal-Mart because said bleach is a Hazardous Material?

Or maybe it because people do not see the experiment in progress here for what it could become?

There are approximately 422,000 CDL holder in the state of Georgia (a former penal colony for those that don’t know history) being forced to comply with a DHS program to be able to continue to work or do business?

Does this not sound remotely like an innocuous test of willingness to comply with silly regulations to keep your job and livelihood? You know, like a preparation test for compliance to something like, oh let's just say a BIO-METRIC chip implanted under the skin?

Just my observation, but if you heat that water slow enough, the frog doesn’t jump out.

Truckers don't have enough responsibility on the road already, according to DHS. Now they need to be amateur profilers, practicing their skills while doing 80 in eighteen-wheelers across the highways of Georgia. The very existance of this program would insult me if I were a trucker personally, for it insinuates commercial drivers haven't acquired enough common sense to determine when something funny is going on. The truckers I've met are among the most level-headed, streetwise people around.

Wonder what the criteria are for the drivers-to-be-profiled...lemme guess

IF you spot a brown-skinned male of Arab descent wearing a turban driving with a woman in a black burka, and they are far away from Atlanta, playing ethnic music on the radio yet wearing sunglasses, you've got potential terrorists!

IF you spot a Gen-X aged caucasian male sporting a mullet and a reversed ball cap driving with a teenaged girl and a bobble-head doll on the dashboard, you've got a potential sex-trafficker!

IF you spot a Latino with a crew cut wearing a tank top having a sip of bottled water while scratching his nose AT THE SAME TIME, uh-oh...you've got a potential snowman on the road!
