According to spaceweahter.com a potentialy hazardous asteroid 2004xp14
will come within 1.1 lunar distance of the earth. Its estimated diameter
is 370m-820m. This sounds like something to be watching as it is going to be at least as close as the moon!

Though as the firing range may be close for this asteroid, we have heard alot of "Dooms day" stuff since then. Is there any calculation's or possible corridinates for the probablity of it coming into earth's atmosphere?

Ha! If you consider the moon "close" then by all means start making for the nearest shelter! However, most of the world should be continuing on their daily business. An approach of 1.1 lunar distance is incredibly large (on average it is 384,403km away). It's not right next door. To give you some scale, the earth is, at it's mid-section, 12,756km in diameter.

So, if we strung up a bunch of earths in a row, we would need about THIRTY more earths to get to the moon on an average day (which would be the lunar distance). Even then, since this asteroid is 1.1 lunar distances away, it might not hit all 31 earths or the moon.

Here's a graphic representation:
O = real earth o = earth . = moon

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

That's the distance from the earth to the moon. The asteroid is about another 3 earth's off, or...

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.ooo.

So, yeah, it's pretty far.

Huzzah for graphical representations!

This one has your name on it The_Sentinel
Oh, that we could live in peace watching Leave it to Beaver again!!! There's so much out to get us, that something just might.

Ward: " I'm home, dear...."
June: Oh, i missed you. Did you pick up the Beave?"
Ward: "I dropped him off downtown....he'll be home later"
June: "Oh, that's nice, dear"

* Ward kisses June*

Alright- its nice to at least remenice (sp)

My House:

"Dave, did you pick up the potatoes for dinner?"
" Oh, for christs sakes, dont i work hard and long enough? You trying to kill me?"

we could all be in big trouble!!!!!!!!!

the earth has such powerful gravity, to keep the moon traveling around it right???

and this asteroid is going to be pretty much, at the SAME DISTANCE as the moon..

but alot smaller than the moon.. so the earth should be able to pull this a bit..
maybe enough to use the orbit of the moon to pull even closer(if its close enough)
what i'm trying to say is...
i think its possible that with all the forces of all the planets and sun and moon
could easily tweek its course.. especially coming that close..
since the earth keeps the moon in place

and when ( if the earth/and/or/moons pull ) the asteroid comes around next time
could be even closer or direct hit!!

i think not, not if the thing is in the gravity field of the sun, the sun is stronger than anything else near than the earth so if the thing is in the suns gravitational pull then no problem

You would need a fairly large telescope say 15inch and know exactly where to look for it.

As to the gravity of earth moving it... any influency our little rock has put on it has already happened. Don't forget the speed its moving at. Its not suddenly gonna turn and head for us. You won't even see it in the night sky...

But just in case... I stocked my bunker. This IS a consoiracy board afterall. THEY are lying to us... its NOT REALLY going to miss... its gonna knock out Cali... PANIC NOW..... sheesh...

Why is everyone on this planet always talking DOOOM? And if the END IS NEAR, hell get out and enjoy it while its there

Scientists have ruled out all possibility of hit hitting Earth. It will simply pass by putting yet again the uber paranoid fatalists in their places.

OK- i've been re-routed to this thread.

I hope today all turns out well- Another possible doomsday? How many are we up to now???

They just keep comming, dont they.

Here's hoping we make it yet once again!!!
