Japanese Robotic Football Team

My mum was speaking to a lecturer at Hull University who teaches computer science, etc. Anyway, he told my Mum that in just twenty years time, the Japanese will have a robotic football team, which will be able to win the World Cup!

I don't know about you but I wouldn't play football against robots, they could malfunction and kick me instead of the ball! I would add something on to that but this is a family friendly forum!

I'll go find some more information on this, but in the meantime, has anybody else heard about this?

You mean like regular players who supposedly "aim" for the ball, but hit the "balls" instead.

Not for at least 10 years IMO and even that is stretching it. AI is the biggest hurdle as it seems artificial muscles are nearly at the point where it would be vastly superior to a natural one(powered by Alcohol too just like real footballers).

Soccer is a very strategic game where tactics are just as important as physical strength and individual skill.

For all I know the world cup tourney of 2050 will be the German Cyborgs versus the Japanese Androids. That would be something to see wouldn't it?

Indeed so! I think sometime in the future when these robots are created, there will be a seperate World Cup tournament just for robots... quite sad really.

The question, "how far is too far?" always springs to mind when I think of robots.

When a self-sufficient Droid is created I doubt they will be competing in Soccer matches. Who's to say they would be even remotely interested in any type of competition. A robot however just does what it's programmed to do. I don't see it as sad, I just see it as the next phase in evolution of which this is just a small segment.

Good question. I don't think it's anybody's decision to make, we'll keep improving robots and then one day it could be too late.
