Around May 8, a cryptic personal ad appeared on Craigslist.com. The ad included a phone number with a NYC area code. When called, a recorded message (similar to the type heard on the shortwave Numbers Stations) was heard. Similarly, a second personal ad appeared on Craigslist on May 29, this time with a San Francisco area code phone number. When the second phone number was called, a similar message was heard.

Back in the days of the Cold War, spies found ingenious and unusual ways to communicate with each other, hiding their communications in plain sight, whether encrypted or not. For instance, an intelligence agent (spy) might contact his case officer (handler) by placing an ad in the personals section of the local newspaper. This practice, it seems, continues today.

On or around May 8, the following personal ad appeared on the Internet classified ad site Craigslist. (It has since been removed.)

For mein fraulein

Mein Fraulein, I haven’t heard from you in a while. Won’t you call me? 212 //// 796 //// 0735

If you actually called the number, up until a couple of days ago you would have heard this prerecorded message (MP3). It’s a head scratcher to keep you National Security Agency analysts occupied in your spare time. Each block of numbers is repeated twice; but below I have transcribed them only once for clarity.

Personally, I find this very disturbing. I'm hoping that the messages are a type of viral marketing campaign, and not some type of covert communication being sent be the Al-Qaeda or other terrorist organization as a means of organizing another attack on the U.S.

Yesterday, a third message appeared on Craiglist, along with another phone number to call, and another cryptic message:

Mein Fraulein,

I hear the weather in the South is good this time of year. Won’t you call me?

The number, when called, does what you expect by now. You would hear this recorded message (MP3) playing groups of numbers, each group repeated twice, apparently for clarity. The numbers are:

I don't know much about cryptology. Maybe someone on the site that does could have a crack at it.
