In remarks aimed at Iran's suspected nuclear ambitions, U.S. President George W. Bush said that if Israel were attacked by Iran, the United States would come to its aid.

edition.cnn.com...

This is how it seems to me anyway - I always thought they probably would anyway, but i feel this "commitment" to defending Isreal could give them "incentive for pre-emptive"!

Anyway, how do you feel about this?

Very misleading title for what the article says. How is giving someone your word that you will come to their aid if attacked, giving them the green light to attack first?

You beat me too it, ludachris. I was just about to say something. Change the title perhaps, Sobolwolf? Although I would have though it obvious that the U.S would come to Israels aid if it were attacked. This seems a bit of a no issue to me.

EDIT: Spelling.

Maybe the President should clarify this statement by stating that if Israel or other friendly countries are attacked first with no provoking attack, we will defend allies. Of course then again maybe it doesn't even matter since the rest of the world probably thinks the US is going to do what the US wants to do. It might not seem wise to let other countries misunderstand our words in thinking they have a green light to attack when they do not.

From June 4 2005 (lest we forget the stage is being set)

The ties that bind China, Russia and Iran
By Jephraim P Gundzik
www.atimes.com...

Growing ties between Moscow and Beijing in the past 18 months is an important geopolitical event that has gone practically unnoticed. China's premier, Wen Jiabao, visited Russia in September 2004. In October 2004, President Vladimir Putin visited China. During the October meeting, both China and Russia declared that Sino-Russian relations had reached "unparalleled heights"

The political stage that has been set provides a precarious position for the EEUA/USA. The majority of our (USA) consumable manufacturing is being accomplished in China. We have closed half the oil refineries in the states over the last 10 years which to most Americans equates to higher 'refined' oil prices. Crude oil could continie to rise but if we had the same refining capacity we had 10 years ago our gas prices would still not be where they are at.

If we are prepare to TAKE Iran and control that oil then according to the link below
www.house.gov...
we would have, with Iraq, a large percentage of the worlds oil under our thumb. This IS a destabilizing factor amongst the power that be.

So, if Israel did set out to destroy their nuclear capability would we REALLY allow it at this time? We might. But at this juncture the stakes are much higher than the last time Israel took a preemptive strike at a nuclear threat.

Order out of Chaos.

Look closely at what you have said - the answer lies therein

Very interesting this - one can also look at China's overtures towards South American Countries as well... this aliance (if committed) has a fair bit of muscle behind it

Yes he did say they would defend if Israel was attacked - but hell if they can drop the towers, staging this would be a cakewalk

Maybe the reason why the president has said this isnt to easy any israeli fears of Iran, which i highly doubt Israel fears Iran anyways, but more or less to tell the American people not to be surprised when congress orders our troops into another country. If Israel was attacked we would no doubt be there sometime that week and it would be a sudden shock to the American people.

I have to dissagree that it would be a shock to the American public if we came to Israels aid if needed. Its known that the US and Israel are allies, but then again alot of Americans from what I saw on some talk show the other night couldnt locate Iraq on the map. So who knows what the general reaction would be, probably split down the middle once again.

And here's the difference! The American people were fed lies to drum up support for the invasion of Iraq. These lies included other lies about the false possibility of Saddam attacking us on our soil via some kind of terrorist groups or by using chemical and bio weapons, and that he was close to the creation of nuclear weapons that once again were to be used by us. And other such shameless crap.

Now, if Israel gets attacked, that in itself doesn't mean our security suffers in any way. If an average American Joe can figure it out, it won't take any geographical skill to say "no" to sending troops to fight for Israel. Why should we care where Israel is anyway.

That my friend is a matter of opinion and how you look at the facts of what is presented, but that aint the issue here.

But as an ally of Israel we should go to their aid, but only if they are attacked first, it is in our nations interest that Israel remain strong. It gives us a powerful ally in the middle east and Israel benefits from economic and military aid. I care if Isreal is there, I have friends from there, some of which have moved back. I care if they are safe or not, I would very much be for the idea of sending military aid in the form of troops and equipment to Israel if they were attacked first.

Well said IudaChris,

I certainly hope we'd defend Israel. Not that I care for the institution, but Israel votes with the US more than any other country, including the UK, in the UN. They are the only established democracy in the region and we need them in the fight against radical Islam. They have one of the world's best intelligence agencies and we routinely coordinate with them.

I doubt, though, that the US would put troops on the ground there. Military aid would most likely come from arms sales and technology support. Israel can handle themselves pretty well.

Of course they vote with us, as we have kept them out of alot of trouble by vetoeing referrals brought against them in the UN, so yes they will vote with us when they can continue to do as they do.
As far as their intelligence agencies yes its quite effective with Iraq as a good example.(Although Chalabi was a main player in this, the Mossad helped too) Im sure their intelligence is also supplying info in all this Iranian mess as well.
You speak about their Mossad as though they are a fabulous contribution to the world. They are assassins, kidnappers, spies and saboteurs. Nothing glorious or beneficial about them, and certainly not an organization to trust unless unless you are Israel. They surely do not trust us as they have been caught spying on us many a time.

You are right, the PieMan.

Israel is looking only after one's country's interest, and that would be Israel. Israel will be willing to manufacture/doctor any intelligence leaked to the US if that is deemed beneficial for the continued influence of Israel in our country's foreign and domestic policy.

I don't doubt there will be some incident soon that will be blamed on the Iranians and the the US will get to play to the Israeli tune once again.
