us air strike on afghan village kills dozens

Up to 80 suspected Taliban militants and an unknown number of civilians have been killed after U.S.-led coalition forces bombed a village in southern Afghanistan.

U.S. warplanes reportedly dropped bombs on an Islamic religious school and homes in which Taliban fighters had taken up position during the strike late Sunday and early Monday.

Canadian troops were not involved in the bombing on the "known Taliban stronghold" village of Azizi in Kandahar province, coalition spokesman Maj. Scott Lundy said.

Kandahar governor Asadullah Khalid told reporters the strike had killed villagers because the Taliban were "using houses as their trenches."

looks like america is doing a good job of "cleaning" the east of terrorism. but whenever i read about these airstrikes i alwys wounder, gee, how many innocent people died in that one? more than a few.

I don't know, how about you tell the Taliban to stop hiding in peoples houses and this won't happened. If the Taliban cares about not endangering their own people, they should flee into the middle of no where instead of going into peoples house. But then they expect the Americans to not bomb them or send soldiers into the house because of civilian population, maybe this action would deter the Taliban not to repeat what they did.

It is impossible to avoid civilians deaths. Insurgents tend to vist villages in order to fetch food that they may have hidden and recurit new members e.t.c
The number of civilians deaths can be reduced by using the resources available in this case the Aust and NZ SAS.
