Now here's a puzzle for you

Tell me something about this strange "VTOL" Aircraft and who ever is first will get a way above vote from me
I'll give you all a tip: it's russian

OK, its a Sukhoi Fitter on skids, Or are you after something else? VTOL, how? with RATO gear?

Its design to take off vertically and land the same way. It can also hover like an helicopter.

The Russian designation for this particular Sukhoi Su-7 is S-26 (C-26 in Russian alphabet), and it was just an experiment with skid undercarriage. As it happens the run of the mill Su-7BKL normally had both skids and wheels.

EDIT: I am pretty sure that it's not capable of vertical take-off/landing.

The Su-7BKL came fitted with wheels and skids, you can see the main undercarriage wheels in the photo you've posted.


Wikipedia even has a pic on it:




It allowed the aircraft to operate on softer terrain, as in snow or soft grass.

This must be the alternate meaning of "VTOL",

Well I did write VTOL in brackets and the plane sure isn't a vtol capable one.
Planeman got my way above vote for the info.
This was just a testbed for a plane capable of landing in some harder conditions.


PS: I don't think the S-26 had a normal tire gear as somene stated earlier but i may be wrong.

But etleast to me the skids make the Su look so much like a VTOL spacekraft from an old sci-fi. So I couldn't resist to startle you a bit ore by puting it in to the question.

Maybe putting a smile next to it would have made it less confusing............but then again it was a puzzle

I thought that you had read that it was a VTOL or picked it up off a VTOL site.
