Who runs the show at area 51?

logreq, your one line answers and neither insightful or helpful to the thread. If you have a source that goes contrary to everyones knowledge of area 51 then please give it to us, but I think even a quick survey would show you that the pervading belief is that area 51 is an air force test base in the Nellis range.

The commander of the Groom Lake facility (Det. 3, AFFTC) is a colonel assigned to the Air Force Flight Test Center. I have met half a dozen of the previous DET 3 commanders (two while they were serving in that position).

The most recent (I believe he has been recently replaced) was attending a ceremony at Edwards a few months ago, along with his vice commander. The master of ceremonies announced him (by name and position!) during the ceremony while listing the distinguished guests. Typically, the DET 3 commander holds the job for about two years.
