Ok this is a question I was thinking about today.I wasn't sure where this would best go so I picked this forum please lock it or move it or whatever needs to be done if it is in the wrong spot but I felt it could have something to do with spirituality.

Anyway so today I was just going on with my life and I realized how much bad crap happened around me. I thought of how much life sucks for some people and I started to feel bad and then I felt bad because I felt bad. I figured what is the point of feeling sorry for anything or anyone else it won't change a thing?

Now I am tired of feeling bad for others. I know I can't change anything, and truly most stuff isn't my problem so would should I even care right? This leads me to my actual question: Is there away I can crush my compassion, so I no longer give a flying crap about anyone else, so I can just live my life and when I hear about bad stuff to others I just shrug my shoulders and go big deal?

Don't get me wrong I have never been Mr. Super Nice or Mr. Bleeding heart but there is stuff that still gets to me and I want it stop. I am sick of being bothered by the troubles of others and feeling bad for it, so I do I kill this?

I fairly well educated on this subject and I can tell you that having no compassion for others is one indicator of a serious personality disorder. If you completely lacked any social integration and were the kind of person who liked to slowly torture kittens and puppies then you could be free of your burden. A severe psychosis would also do the trick, as in completely losing touch with reality. Although there is little you can do to actually cause yourself to become psychotic, I guess you could try.

If you work on it hard enough you could someday become a successful child molester or serial rapist, they are almost alway characterised by a lack of compassion.

On a more serious note - Remember that there is a difference in empathy and sympathy. It is normal and human and expected in most every culture that you should feel empathy toward others, and sympathy occasionally.

If you have persistent depressive thoughts that are interfering with your life (concerning this matter of compassion,) then perhaps there are some changes that should be made. Is this the case?

If it is not, then I believe that you should never try to completely rid yourself of compassion. To do so would be to damage your own psyche and become less human.

Firstly, I should say, that, far from being a bad thing, your feelings indicate to me that you are most likely a very good, caring person, and you have no reason to regret them.

Secondly, instead of focusing on the things you cannot change, like suicide bombers in Iraq or starving children in Africa, think about the things closer to home that you can change, and try to help out where possible. People say you can't change the world, but that's not true. You can change the world, you just have to do it one piece at a time.
