Trekkies got to be some of the wierdest people on the planet. I am interested in fine scale models (these are not toys), just look at the modeling magazines. Of course my primary interest is WW2 German aircraft (1931-1945). Among the modeling people are those who build Sci-fi models. I have always had some disdain for the Sci-fi modelers since there is no prototype (actual aircraft for comparision of fidelity of detail). People who build models of actual space craft do not fall in this category. Here is my story about the weirdness level of trekkies. A buddy and me were at an IPMS show (International Plastic Model Society). I was admiring some nicely made WW2 fighters when my buddy asked what I thought of a certain model of the starship Enterprise. I told him that I really did not pay attention to sci-fi models since there is no actual prototype for comparison. He said I should see this particular Enterprise because the guy who made it built it to studio specifications. In short this model was built exactly the same as the one they used to make the original Star Trek series. I looked an it was somewhat impressive. THE MODEL NEVER MADE IT HOME and here is why. Some trekkie saw it an wanted it. The trekkie found the guy and ask him how much he wanted for it. The guy responded, "It is not for sale". The trekkie then ask the builder, "Well name a price." The guy who built the model replied, "Well I will take $20,000 for it" thinking it would shut the trekkie up. The trekkie disappeared and came back about an hour later with a cashier's check for $20,000. Now who is going to tell me that trekkies are not totally weird.

I also used to be into models. I think the best kind are the radio controlled super scale ones with the six foot wingspan. The newer radio controlled jets are cool also. Those bad boys will decapitate you if you get wacked in the head by one. Now I do not have the time, room, or money for that though so I build 3d models on my computer and make the occasional animation.

Could someone define "dork".

Well, the themes contained in each hobby evaluation seem to define "dork" as a person who is going through the following: social withdrawal, lack of exposure to sexual outlet (implication of no long-term relationship), too much free time on their hands, and an obsessive fixation with pointless behaviors.

There is a point to all behaviors, so regardless of labels, what is the literal function of the behaviors? In what ways does it benefit/cost the individual? In what ways does the behavior benefit/cost society?

Ohh I dont mean this in any harsh way. I just am kinda sick of kids feeling like # becase of kids makin fun of them......I have to agree trekkies are kinda weird. But dont get me wrong they are not inferior solely because of their hobbies. I think that "dorkiness" is almost a lifestyle. Trekkies for example tend to have a diminished sex-life for many reasons. Not just their love for star trek
Look man Im just lookin out for the less socially satisfied kids. No that i have grown up a bit I realize things about society. Its important to realize that there are many factors leading to dorkiness and that people shouldnt be hang out with people just because of social standing.

Here is an other one to put on the "strange behavoir" list. Those people who go to the "Rocky Picture Horror Show" for the 600th+ time.

What was you best model? What was your longest project? Were you ever into quarter scale?

I think Mkultra hit is on the head.

Who is everyone trying to fool, everyone knows these things are dorky.

Going and telling a woman that I enjoy mountain biking and rock climbing isn't going to decrease my chances of getting a date from her, it might increase it. Telling a woman that I spend every free moment of my life playing pokemon isn't going to get me anywhere 99.9% of the time, except for maybe a look of desperation on her face as she tries to think of any reason she can to get away from me.

maybe you and your dork friends will think you are the coolest people on the planet, but nobody else does, live with it and except it. Not everyone needs some sort of sexual contact from the opposite sex to feel fulfilled. Its ok.

I don't go see the movie...I bought the commercial video tape & watch it at home. I'm also a Star Trek fan (not as "deep-spaced" as the one who paid $20000 for a flippin' model, though), I play RPG's (A pretty wide variety) & I buy/read comic books (But I won't shell out $10000+ for *any* comic, even if it is a mint-condition Action #15). But I also happen to be happily married (even to a non-fan of my own hobbies!) & have a reasonably satisfying life (Even with Bush in Office).

Besides, I'm not questioning anything to do with the social implications here...But I have tried to find out the conspiratorial source for that list...To repeat:

Just precisely, whose definition of "dorky" is being used to create these classifications?!

Why are so many people getting offended by this list?! I thought it was hilarious!
..lighten up people! I know people that probably fall under all of those categories... scary..

Dreamz... Dreamz... Dreamz....

NEXT time post the first paragraph of the article (like they ask you to politely in our Rules) and then post the link to the REST of the article.

Please?

(Dreamz didn't write this. It's a link that's been passed around in a lot of LJ blogs, however.)

...and the geeks shall inherit the earth...

I qualify in at least 4 (or 5) of those categories. If "dorks" are a genetic variation of "nerds", "geeks", and "dweebs", then I count myself as one of them proudly.

Now roll D20 vs. Death Magic !!

most of the stuff on that list are harmless pastimes (hell, I'm a Trekkie and scrapbook once in a while), but furries are the bane of the internet. seriously. google 'furries' and see what pops up. probably won't be work-safe or soul-safe. they are some creepy #ers.

Well I have to admit I am a big Star Trek fan,I dont have any uniforms or spock ears,but I have a small model collection of Star Trek ships.
Captain kirk is the best, surely in the future they would have a cure for baldness so whats with Picard..

I also used to be a bit of a AD&D fan too,I think I still have my DMs Guide somewhere.

I guess that classifies me as a dork

-Shooting?
-R/C cars?
-Static model building?
-Bicycling?
Well,if they are these will be reduced to only one soon,I am going to put all of this in storage and go Bicycling on a full time basis.
If you enjoy it you should do it full time,the 9 to 5 is a waste of time and always will be.
Don't wait to retire,you might not live that long.

What about these, are they not more dorky than some on the top ten dork list?

* Philately
* Slot car racing
* Model aircraft or railway building
* Embroidery
* Whittling
* Chess playing
* Brass band membership
* Bible study class?

I would have thought some of the older hobbies that require the wearing of shirts of a color not found in nature, and the carrying of four different colored pens in one's shirt pocket, would be more dorky than the dorkiest on the top ten list.

As in all such things, it takes a dork to know a dork.

I think I claim one from the Top Ten list and one from my list above.
