Oh and if youre an American, it dosent do this country any good to keep this negativity up, noones forcing you to like the president (i dont) but that doesnt mean that poking fun at your own elected leaders gives a good impressoin to the world.. This post makes me sick.

You know what. I seem to recollect that during the election and re-election campaigns it wasn't a problem for him to talk crap about his fellow presidential hopefuls.
Its our right to freedom of speech if we wish to voice our opinions and our disgust, distrust or dissatisfaction. It doesn't make you any better or make anyone else any worse. He laughs in his supporters faces every day by doing things to bring this upon himself and force people like you to have to come to his defense. Its a great country when a President can laugh right in your face when a Vice President can go without reporting a shooting incident and the president can joke about it a few weeks later by saying he puts his hands in the air when he sees the VP. HA HA HA...now you try shooting someone and take your time going to the cops and see what happens. He laughs because hes telling you straight to your face about dishonesty and he can still get away with it. You'd still be in court awaiting your trial.

Russian soldier!

Abraham Lincoln
He was awesome as president.

A Republican
Won presidency without getting a majority popular vote
Berated often for his speaking ability, and unusual looks.
Criticised for his ideas for social reform.
Little or no international experience.
Outspoken proponent for freedom of an oppressed group of people.

Deja vu?

i don't think it's pathetic. he's showing he's just an average person.

so according to the first few people on this topic, he's pathetic because he's not allowed to have his best day as catching a fish on his lake. the only pathetic thing here is that pathetic attitude you have toward a president that he has to have his best day as meeting some world leader...

Hmmmm. Mr. Bush's best day during his presidency is catching a perch. It seems to be a likely answer for a guy whose new technique to woo the populace is by just "being himself".

Yes, he's allowed to fish, because fishing is a relaxing and wonderful pasttime. But when you're fishing...or playing a guitar...while a category three hurricane nearly decimates an American city, then it isn't so wonderful. Isn't it?

Really, its not like we expected anything profound, anyway.

We BB's never stop the bashing, do we.

THe attempts to defend Bush's answer are really funny. Yes, he's an "average guy" that is allowed to relax, and I won't argue that point. But I WILL argue that a President who names catching a fish as his best day in office IS pathetic. I would also argue that this really IS the best he can possibly come up with because he hasn't accomplished a single positive thing yet...in FIVE years. This wasn't an interview with Fins and Feather or something, it was an interview with an international newspaper.

I'd like to make it clear that I'm not 'defending' his answer. The answer is so vacuous that defending it is pointless. It's simply a throw away answer to what I consider a throw away 'feel good' question. Apparently, he wasn't asked a particularly probing question; just about a 'high point' (Hmm, college I would have originally guessed).

My point is, not everything out of the man's mouth is worthy of critical scrutiny. Don't misunderestimate (??) me here, most of what he says needs to be looked at from all angles. Some of it can be shrugged off for what it is; nothing worth getting worked up over.

No... we really don't.

Just because you have a problem with someone doesnt mean you should repeadetly peck at their soul for every minor verbal slipup.

If I went after every minor verbal slip-up, gaff, faux pas and downright flub, I'd be busy all day and all night. I pick my Bushisms.

Good point Majic.
But he doesn't drive me crazy, it's just that my eyes roll so much at his actions, I just look that way.

that fish was not a largemouth bass. it looks a hell of a lot more like a striped bass and, at least in NY State, that size fish is illegal to keep.

striped bass - see the stripes?

largemouth bass - notice no stripes

catching a striper is a big deal for many fisherman. the schoolie size that bush is holding is illegal in most states. should catching a tiny illegal fish be the best day of your life? holding it up for the world to see? no.

tuna, marlin, sailfish, etc are fare more rare and impressive. A giant striper is a rarity and a wonder to behold (and eat) but they happen often enough. I get at least 3 big ones each year (25 to 30 pounds). He should be fined for keeping that fish.

Crakeur,
I'm lost, where are you getting the photo of Bush with a fish for comparison?

Some US presidents were cool like Abraham Lincoln, but Bush?

Abraham Lincoln cool? I don't think so! He was our enemy. He provoked us into firing the first shots which led up to the worst disaster ever in American history.

Abe Lincoln was an imbecile among imbeciles!

in this morning's NY Daily News they had a picture of Bush holding up a striped bass. It was a different angle from the one shown below but the fish was definitely not a largemouth bass. It is possible that the paper printed the picture in error but the man was catching illegals.

Ugh, he's such a joke. 2008 will be a big turning point for America. Either we get a better president. Or one worse then Bush...not looking foward to it.

Yeah, that's a striped bass, caught off of the Northeast coast, not in Bush's lake. I think they may have put a stock photo on the story. We don't know if he actually kept that fish. It's not illegal to catch them, just keep them.

Back on topic;

This article here
Has the story with a slightly different tone,

Bush admitted it was not easy to pick a best moment because "I've had a lot of great moments," according to a transcript of the Friday interview released Sunday.

"I would say the best moment was when I caught a 7 1/2-pound largemouth bass on my lake," Bush said, laughing.

Sounds to me like he simply blurted the first thing that came to mind. Actually wish he would do that more often. Children say the darndest things.

I dunno, 7.5 pounds is HUGE for a lake perch. That'd be near the top of my list too. I caught a 15 pound pickeral (walleye) once, and I was like...... ONG!!!!! That thing was like 35 inches long.

But yeah, fishing isn't really a duty of the president. What an off-topic answer.

you know, we should cut the guy some slack. in his presidency he has very little good happen. whether you blame him or not, take a peek at some of what he has endured:

9/11
economic downslide (started in 2000 but increased to far worse levels in his tenure)
hurricanes
gas price issues

hard to find good in his time in office when so much bad is going on. yes, some of it is his fault, some of it was made worse by him but some of it was not his fault and some of it was happening when he took office.

still, he spends too much time thinking about his vacations. the world is in turmoil and he is at the wheel. he can rest and relax when he is out of office.

Was he talking about Lake Pontchartrain?

Just kidding.

Seriously though, what if he would have said something like "My best day was when the troops pulled Saddam out of that spider hole", or "when we brought down the Taliban". Would that have offended anyone?

I'm certainly not defending the guy. I also think his best day will be his last day in office, but I am curious if anyone thinks this or any other answer would have been more acceptable.

A "feel good question" so he gave a "feel good answer?" You are kidding right? He was responding to his best day as PRESIDENT...not best day on freakin' vacation! But he spends so many days on vacation who can tell one from the other I guess.

That would have been worse. Had he said one of those answers people would have replied "we never should have been there" etc.

It does suck that Bush is in office though because President Gore would have said his best moment was when he invented the internet, and President Kerry would have said his best moment was when he... oh wait... did he... yes he did... no he didn't... yes... no... he'll have to get back to you on that one.

Those who want to pick at politicians will do so regardless of what they say... so the answer to your question is no matter what the answer was "someone" would've been offended.
