RUSSIA and China had officially informed Tehran they would not support sanctions or military action over the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, Iran's foreign minister reportedly said today.

UN ambassadors from the US, Britain and France are expected to introduce a resolution this week to legally oblige Iran to comply with UN Security Council demands that it halt all uranium enrichment work.
Russia and China are veto-wielding permanent members of the council.

"The thing these two countries have officially told us and expressed in diplomatic negotiations is their opposition to sanctions and military attacks," Manouchehr Mottaki said to Kayhan newspaper.

"At the current juncture, I personally believe no sanctions or anything like that will be on the agenda of the Security Council."

Western diplomats say China and Russia will probably back a UN resolution demanding a halt to Iran's fuel work, but are not yet ready to back moves towards sanctions.

Iran has been hauled before the UN Security Council after failing to convince the international community that its nuclear power station program is not a front for building an atom bomb.
Yesterday, US President George W. Bush phoned his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to discuss ways to block Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, the White House said.

Mr Bush "stressed the importance of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons", including efforts currently ongoing in the UN Security Council.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the two leaders "committed to remaining in close contact on this important priority".

It said the initiative for the conversation came from Washington on the eve of "multiple consultations at various levels".

Why doesnt Iran just obide with the international nuclear commision thingy? Allow the UN to do inspections on their sites.. if indeed they seek encrichment for power, there should be no problem

true but

the problem is the US the issue over the "complexsity" of TEHRAN nuclear program
this is the stance and argument US took on IRAQ prior 03

they just don't have one big plant
there are well over an est. 2,000 of known and unknown sites spread across IRAN(some in most cases road mobile)

which makes it hard to determine and pin point at a given notice
vital material and equipment need to make a war head can be moved from site to site undetected

yeah the UN can go in and inspect but their not going to find a smoking gun when they do go in, if at all
TEHRAN will just get sanction 2 death and they will build their bomb

as for RUSSIA and CHINA its in their best "INTEREST" to do so, the name of the game is power(song by ICE T)
