We find it difficult to believe that life and reality is actually as dull and straightforward as it appears and are seeking out evidence to show that there's more to it than that.

Quite so. History is just stories selected and edited by people who have an agenda to promote their religions and ideals. "Facts" are fluid. The real truth is buried or ignored because it's messy or doesn't fit a good narrative. I've sometimes thought that if a person were able to time travel to view historical events they'd probably be baffled most of the time because what really happened would be so different from the accepted history that it would be mostly unrecognizable.

Saw an interview, where it was claimed that The American Historical Society was totally usurped by the Carnegie Foundation, way back in the early 20th century.
They had university doctoral candidates screened, and only chose those that would be favorable to the agenda, then they were helped to get their PHDs, and then brought in to run the Historical Society,

There is also ample proof that the same was done by the Rockerfellers, for high-school education in the USA, and possibly elsewhere.
