Puerto Rican schools, government offices close

Well the government of Puerto Rico ran out of money today, closing schools and government offices.

The government of Puerto Rico ran out of money Monday, forcing the U.S. commonwealth to close public schools and shut down government offices, putting almost 100,000 people out of work.

The legislature and governor failed to reach a last-minute accord that would have averted the first-ever partial shutdown of the government in island history.

I guess someone will have to step in to help them out of this mess.

Maybe if they only apply sales taxes something small like even 3% on all the tourist related stuff, hotels, cruises, shopping etc, they might not have this problem??

Will this have an affect on the 'bid for statehood' for the island? Will the public be more willing to become a US state if they perceive that status as being able to prevent this sort of thing?

I'm from and live in Beutyful Puerto Rico.
I belive the culprit here are the two bigest political
parties in here. The P.N.P. (Pro-statehood) and the
P.P.D. (The pro-commonwealth Party).
They can not see eye to eye if one puts a idea the other one
will shoot it down, without thinking if it will work for the people
of Puerto Rico or not.
They (the senate and the House of representative) are guilty
of mayor over spending also. Must of this people have 3 or 4
assistants when 1 or 2 will be better, the have official car and
drivers, escorts and a army of body guards. This are some
of the things that got the Puerto Rico's govertment in troble in
this financial crissis.'

As a foot note I heard of a school (Rafael Hernandez middel school)
try to open this morning and the teachers and student were taken out
of the school by the State Police.

Sounds like you have the same Red State versus Blue State situation in PR we have up here. Gridlock.

Has Jack Abramoff been visiting to PR lately? The same problem around the world. The ruling elite do not want to share with the impoverished, nor do they want to pay taxes.

I really don't think that if a election were to
be taken place today the Pro-Statehood party
will win today. I'm even willing to bet good money
in this.
Also I really don't think the Indipendent party would win
neither, It will most likely stay a commonwealth as it is today.
That is what in my opinion Pres. Buch ment when he said "our
neihbors to the South " Refering to Puerto Rico, note that he DID NOT
said "our fellow citisens"

Today 05/09/06 on or about 1345 hrs the goverment of
Puerto Rico had not reached a agrement to stop the
financial crissis. Today about 900 thouthand people are still
without a job as a direct resolt of the clossing.
