Self confidence and belief in your abilities is essential in any conflict, do you think the Iranians are sitting around trembling - and look at all they have to defend themselves with - powerboats with rocket launchers.

It's called self confidence and pride in your nation - the only thing your people would die for is the last bottle of Becks.

From video I’ve seen of these gunboats I was not impressed, they are basically powerboats with small diameter rocket tubes installed on top.

Now here is the problem with this concept.

Using unguided ballistic rockets to hit moving ships is hopeless.
Due to their small size the rocket have to be short ranged.
No Anti-Air systems on the boats whatsoever.
And once again due to their small size their warheads will do little damage to any large warship.

As you can see these boats would get massacred by sea based attack helicopters and attack aircraft maintaining a kill zone around a US warship.

The only thing foolish here is to believe you can go into a conflict, especially in a confined area, and expect you'll take no losses simply because you can outfight your opponet.

There can be no doubt of three things, 1) Iran CAN close the Straites of Hormuz, for at least a limited period of time. 2) Iranian weapons CAN be utilised in manners that CAN pose some very real threats. 3) Iran CANNOT match the United States in terms of raw resources to pour into a full scale war.

So the real questions (as far as I'm concerned) are, 1) How could the US best meet these threats in the event of war, and 2) How could Iran best utilise her resources.

Personally, I do not believe the current climate makes war with Iran a winnable prospect.

At least not any real significant loss to cripple your ability to continue fighting the war. Iran CAN destroy soft targets like oil tankers and can perhaps shut down the Straits for a short period of time but at what cost? Do you know what will happen to their military for shutting down a major oil shipping lane?

Past example like Operation Earnest Will and Operation Praying Mantis offer a quick reminder.

To Westpoint23

To be fair america's capbilities have increased since that time and infact so has Iran's they no have cruise missiles with ranges upto 280km which would allow them to backup there boats/mine's with cruise missile attacks that can cover pretty much all of that area they also have gotten supersonic ASCM for that area as well i think those pictures where posted on this forum a few weeks ago.

Also this time the Iranians are have different types of mine's as well to use. The chinese Mines with a rocket inside them i can't remember there name and also they have gotten some new "intelligent" mines with advanced sensors from china and russia. As well as self guiding torpedo's etc...

This time i have doubt of america being able to clear the mines from that area against Iran. Although the american navy is infinate time more powerfull then Iran's but they do have backup from land based anti-ship cruise missiles and newer mines and torpedo's then they did last time as well as the those weapons they the Iranians also have quantity on there side this time. Since 1992 Iran has gone on a shopping supree buying production technology and weapons tech from where ever it could.
