Freedom versus State Protection from Terrorism

Benjamin Franklin once said . . . "They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security"

My question is...where do YOU draw the line on the sacrifice of democratic principles in order to provide protection from 'terrorism'.

The current "War on Terror" seems to be allowing 'democratic' governments unprecedented powers to erode individual's rights. An example being the classification of 'enemy combatants' that allows for the sidestepping of a basic tenet of democracy, ie: the right to a 'fair trial'......

What rights do you consider to be 'off limits'?

Personally, I still find it hard to come to terms with the fact that 'democracies' such as the US and the UK are detaining people without telling them why, without giving them access to legal representation and without trial.
