I'm sure this had been covered many times...if it has, can someone point me in the direction of the right thread..

is there any scientific reason why the ratio between the size of the sun/moon and the distance between is exactly right to form total eclipses?? It does seem a bit strange and I've heard many conspiracies stories about it.

thanks!

The answer is simple ... They're not the same size. Its a common misconception that the moons disk is exactly the same size as the suns, infact their sizes change all the time.

In a total eclipse the moons disk is normally bigger than the suns and in an annular eclipse the moons disk is smaller than the suns causing a "ring of fire" effect. Rarely, in a hybrid eclispe the moons disk changes size during totality and the eclipse can change from a total to a hybrid or the other way.

I cant really think of any concievable conspracy theory relating to this and any that you hear are surely total rubbish because of everything I said above.
