Could yall please tighten up the nut behind the buttplate/stock. And keep the one liners out of this. I know you all, do under stand, the potential use of one liners, can be punishable.

Uhm, actually they chose the F-14 because it made its first flight two years before the F-15 did. The Tomcat flew in 1970, the F-15 in 1972.


Initial operational capability in 1973; first flight on 21 December 1970. 79 Tomcats were delivered to Iran before the 1979 Revolution. They are normally grounded for lack of parts; some were seen flying during December 1989 Iranian maneuvers. The US Navy has 699 in service or on order, with deliveries continuing. (The aircraft was not procured by the US Marine Corps.)

The first F-15A flight was made on 27 July 1972, culminating one of the most successful aircraft development and procurement programs in Air Force history. After an accident-free test and evaluation period, the first aircraft was delivered to the Air Force on Novermber 14, 1974. In January 1976, the first Eagle destined for a combat squadron was delivered to the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing at Langley Air Force Base, Va. Three hundred and sixty-five F-15As were built before production of the F-15C began in 1978. In January 1982, the 48th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron at Langley Air Force Base became the first Air Force air defense squadron to transition to the F-15. After twenty years of service, the F-15A has recently been reassigned from active duty Air Force fighter squadrons to Air National Guard units. The F-15A is flown by Air National Guard squadrons in the states of Oregon, Missouri, Georgia, Louisiana, Hawaii, and Massachussets.

The F-14 came about because the USN decided not to buy the F-111B because of developmental problems with the Varks, but they wanted something similar, with the VG wings, and the Pheonix capability.

The AIM-54 ALSO degraded the Tomcat performance significantly. It was CAPABLE of carrying 6 but only during land based ops. From a carrier it could only carry four of them, because of weight problems.

As far as I'm aware, the Phoenix was intended in a "shoot them down WAY over there" role, which means it's degredation of the overall aircraft performance would have been minimal when that performance really mattered, in close in dogfighting. Simply because by then it should have already spent those missiles.

Well if you want to do a high speed interception of a possible enemy who could launch 300 km ranged missles. Well then performance does matter. The F14 is really designed to make speedy interceptions with heavy missles. The F15 is not its designed to be a air superiority fighter. That conflicts somewhat with carrying big missles like the phoenix and intercept someone before he can launch it's missles at a carrier.

Isn't one of the objectives of the FALCON program, to (relitively) cheaply launch sats into orbit? So why have this?

no, I think he just missed a comma. try this...

The F-15 is not, it is designed to be an air supiriority fighter.


One thing people often overlook is that an F-14 is (hopefully) not going to be taking off from a carrier deck and rushing out as fast as it can at supersonic speeds to launch against a threat once it's detected. That F-14 is going to already BE out there at it's patrol range, burning holes in the sky, looking for the threat before it get's anywhere close to the carrier group. Once it's devoid of AIM-54s, it's role becomes one of an air supiriority fighter. It's not the most agile aircraft in the world, but it's variable geometry wing allows it to either make it's high speeds, or hang out in it's patrol box loitering around.
