Proud to be an American.

The gurney was not that uncomfortable and he liked the fact that the sheets were new. He briefly wondered what price they would bring some day when they made it to Ebay. It would seem to be a strange thought for a man about to die, but his thoughts were all over the place in these last few moments of life. In the back of his mind the song kept playing, he wished it would stop but it would not.

“Proud to be an American, Where at least I know I’m free.”

Lee Greenwoods voice was loud and clear as he tried to chase it away with thoughts of other things. One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter. He had come to hold that belief dear in the last years of life. He was not a terrorist he told himself over and over, He was fighting for the rights of all his fellow countrymen.

“And I’ll proudly stand up, next to you…”

He had come to terms with the lives he had taken in the fight against tyranny. His had been a war against the oppressors of the people. Now he would pay the price for having waged that war. It was how it must be. He remembered his favorite T-shirt and how it had been used against him at his trial. In bold letters across the front it had stated, “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” And as a patriot he must now give his own blood to the cause.

“And defend her still today,”

His left arm was strapped down to a sideboard of the gurney and the needles were now securely inside his veins, taped in place to insure they would not come out. He did not struggle, there was no struggle left in him, only a resignation to fate and justifications that played over and over in his mind.

“Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land.”

History would be the judge of his actions. It would show to all of posterity that he had been right. His life would be the blazing torch for other freedom fighters in the never-ending struggle to overthrow the tyrants that would enslave all of mankind. These thoughts were his only consolation as the chemicals began to flood into his body.

“God bless the U.S.A.’

The blackness closed in and forever washed away the dark and twisted world of Timothy McVeigh.
