It was around 8.30pm, and I noticed a bright distant white flashing that was stationary for about 30 seconds. Then it started moving vertically up as the flashing got dimmer and dimmer and suddenly vanished. It wasnt a plane - much too high for a plane. Wasnt a satellite as it was way too bright, and satellites move horizontally anyway.
Any ideas what it could have been if it wasnt a UFO?

i have seen a few lights in the sky that are weird but i dont pay much attention to them and i dont really read them in the ufo reports i skip over reports of single points of light high in the sky it could be to many things NON ufo. what i find interesteing are the reports of Gigantic black triangles Huge rectangular ufos and where people actually see a physical craft not just lights.

A very interesting one i read was somone saw several helicopters in a formation with a large gap between the front and back rows. as it passed over that saw a massive black triagle against the greyish night sky. it was being escourted by heliocopters. maybe they wanted to keeps its lights off to hide it. and there is no way they would fly somthing of this size with no lights somthing would hit it. also i read a report from exeter NH a guy who wa sin the military 30 years saw a craft he estimated to be 2000ft long in daylight fly over his house.

thats what i want to see somthing huge that i can see a real object

Im only replying so you dont waste to many hours thinking you saw something....

You think you can determine the altitude of a plane by watching it's light flash? You have no information on the plan or the lights used....

You are desribing a plane

Ive seen heaps of planes in the sky - nothing like this! Why would a plane be stationary anyway??Im pretty sure I can determine the altitude from a flash - it was very high. And it went from bright flash to dim flash in an instant with a real fast vertical acceleration. Anyway, it was a thrill to see my first UFO (even if it may not be one)!

Marcus,

Keep watching the skies, and not just at night. This could be your first sighting. You'll just have to wait and see. It's exciting I know, but keep your head when you see something. Remember you have more to fear from other humans than you do from UFO's. Get a camera phone. I wish I'd had one in September 2004 when I witnessed a spectacular rectangle UFO in broad daylight.

Good luck and please keep us posted on any future sightings.

Camera phones are a blessing my first UFO encounter was about eight years ago and i havent had one as good as then since. It was no higher than trees it was, however quite small compared to the pictures and videos of one. It was definetely round in shape and at alternating lights along the side. I just stared at and it didnt occur to me to go and get my camera before it was too late. It had me captivated. what would you say that was?

I believe there are some satellites that are in pole orbits, aren't there? I could swear I read that somewhere. Are you sure that's not what you were seeing?

It could have been a plane, most likely taking off, with it's safety lights on. It didnt look like it was moving because you were in line with it's path...this also would make such lights very bright.

As it rose, it got dimmer, because the angle of flight was moving up, rather then in your direction. It "dissapeared"because they shut off safety lights, and go to beacons at a certain alt. Had you been able to see the object with binoculars, you might have seen small red/blue flashing lights after the "dissapearance".

who knows what it was...
satellites dont move around...
planes cant maneuver like that...
&& stars dont eether.
hmmm...
maybe it was actually a alien space craft!
>: )
thatd be rad.

You said the light moved vertically up? That doesn't sound like most planes. You could see the headlights of a plane as it climbs rapidly from far aware and it would appear like you described but that won't happen at high elevations. I can't think of any other typical craft of humans that would behave that way at that elevation. Even a fighter jet probably wouldn't show the bright lights like this.

Well if it was in his line of sight, it would appear to move up while not appearing to the naked eye to deviate left to right. As it moved up to a higher alt, the lights would "dim" as theyre out of his line of sight.

I have to go with the balloon idea here sorry.

A few years back i spotted something that is ust as you are describing, i did a little digging around locally trying to rule things out and i believe i found what it was. An amateur astronomy/science group had released a large home made balloon to measure the air moisture, wind speed, cloud thickness (or something like that).

Try and look at the rational before looking for alien craft. Some things can't be explained beyond an actual craft but most sightings can, and this really sounds like a very simple one.

Balloon caught in a thermal sounds about right, it would shoot up quick.

Thanks guys for all your theories and ideas. The weather balloon option may sound like the best bet if it wasnt a UFO, but I dont know how could a weather balloon move so fast - I will keep an open mind. Whatever it was, Ive never seen anything like it before - and I hope to see it again. I live in west australia in Perth where nothing exciting ever happens in the night skies here so it was a thrill to see something that may be a UFO.

Agreed!

It most likely was not, but would appear that way if traveling directly toward or away from you.

Or it was climbing and moving away from you which would add the speed of assent plus the forward velocity in the amount of time between flashes.

It could also be a fighter plane, I have seen them do touch and goes at the airport late at night, and let me tell you they can climb like a bat outta hell…

As to the altitude, I can tell you what type of aircraft is coming in from the landing light configuration, when I worked at the airport and knew the schedules, I could also tell you exactly what airline and flight number, but even with all that I could NEVER tell you their altitude. The dark sky makes for a lot of optical illusions; pilots also experience these illusions while flying. If you ever get a chance go to a library and get a pilots flight training manual and take a look at the amount of different optical illusions that forward movement and change in attitude verses lights on a dark field can cause.

Sounds like a rotating beacon or navigation strobe to me…

None of the ufo's I ever saw had flashing lights. The lights would dim and go out sometimes. You wouldn't feel the same after seeing one as before seeing one. The light has a radio frequency to it and it will put you in a weird place. I've never seen them pulse the light.

I have to correct myself here. Just recently I did see something that flashed on and off. It wasn't on 1-16 but a date very close to that. I saw it out of the corner of my eye and as I looked in that direction it dived at an angle toward the earth like a meteor. I've never seen a meteor that flashed on and off like that. Then it just disappeared. It wasn't green like most other meteors I've seen. If I correct, it is someone who has made contact before and who wishes his identity not to be revealed. That one is a possible friendly.
