There is an increase compared to recent decades, but the twentieth century, particularly the latter half of the 20th century, was relatively quiet and benign compared to centuries past. Earthquakes, hurricanes, droughts, floods, etc were much more common previously than what contemporary people are used to. It only appears to be increasing.
