CHIBA, Japan - Sony Corp offered a preview Tuesday of its next-generation PlayStation, a hybrid gaming machine with digital media hub features: a TV tuner, DVD and hard-drive recording and photo album and music player functions.

The muscled-up, network-ready console, called the PSX, testifies to the intensifying competition among consumer electronics companies to make the living room the locus of home digital entertainment.

About the size of the PlayStation2, the PSX is to go on sale in Japan late this year, beginning at $720 for a 160- gigabyte hard disk version that can record 200 hours of digital video.

160GB's ....damn, i gotta get me one of those when they come out, i think this is sony making the move for the complete entertainment centre, possibly reactive to microsofts XP media centre edition technology?

The problem is that for $720 no one is going to buy it.

If they were smart, they would release a portable ps2 like they did the ps1 a few years ago... this is just a ps2 in a fancy new case with a few extra features trying to copy the xbox.

I was thinking about a portable PS2 whilst seeing a picture of the portable PS1, i'm sure plenty of people will be buying PSX and i'm probably one of them...once they drop it down in price of course

Oh...and then i can say i have an item very few other people do, aside from williams shatners biography

I am guessing its to compete with the Media Center. So 700 is much nicer than almost 2000. Still not going to buy one, my PS2 is working just fine.

It does seem very expensive for what it is. Ill stick to my sky+ and my x-box set up, cheaper and better!

infact reading its features.. it doesnt seam that badly priced...

if its a digital box, dvd recorder, ps one and ps 2... plus extras..

sounds a fair price ish

dvd recorders are stll pretty expensive over here about 250pounds,

maybe its about 50-100pounds overpriced but that will come down for sure...

I still think the ultimate system to have would be a portable ps2....

There is a portable ps system coming out, it's code name at the moment is PSP (Playstation Portable) and is rumoured to be nearer to the PS2 in terms of power - but with it's lower resolution screen it means that it might be able to push a little more.....

Good info on the unit:

Looking forward to it, Nintendo has been on top of the handheld gaming market for too long...

I'd wish it was backwards compatible with the ps2 though. Imagine being able to play games like grand theft auto vice city or ssx 3 on the go.

i dont really bother with handhelds... i used to have a game boy back about 8 years ago..

The Ngage is supposed to be pretty powerful, but I just see it as another distraction for drivers that like to yak on the cell phone. As for the prospect of the PSX, I sure hope they fixed the dvd problems, as playing dvds in a ps2 burns out the reader (ive had to replace my ps2 about 5 times now) The thing thats going to make or break the new PS will be online play, and more importantly not getting hit twice in the wallet for the same thing(XboxLive) I must say though that the look of the PSX is not as awe-inspiring as the PS2 was when photos first came out. Being a avid gamer, and long time sony supporter, I'll probably be first in line to get one on launch day, as i was with the ps2.

the Nokia N-gage is a powerful portable system, but at a price - and there's only 10 games available on launch, GBA has over 500 - safest bet is the GBA-SP - hold out for PSP tho is my advice

Having seen the graphics on Nokia's regular phones I highly doubt that the Ngage will be able to compete with the gameboy advance...

The N-gage isn't a normal phone with Snakes II bundled with it - it can handle the equivalent of Tomb Raider 1 and 2 the games in terms of 3D and it looks nice, plus you've got the prospect of wireless gaming and competing in the Nokia Area (shadow times that you record and send and others can download to try to beat etc.) - looks nice, but over price, yeah you can play mp3s on it, but so what...
