I've heard of Rush! A friend of mine used to talk them up all the time about 15 years ago. I think they were really big in the US or UK or both, but I've never heard them on the radio. The song I remember is Fly By Night.

That's one of the songs I haven't heard. Most popular albums probably are
Moving Pictures and 2112(although I don't think the latter is anything special). Just started to discover them a few months back.

FBN is from '75 and was the first album by the current lineup. That's right current! In the last four years RUSH has released a new studio album, toured the world twice and released two live double Cd's. The latest album is 'Vapor Trails'. It's 80 minutes long and kicks ass! Rumor has it that their back in the studio now finishing up another new one. They're still one of the best live acts you can find; they use no warm up group, and play two, 1&1/2 hour sets. Check 'em out.

Got the Rush albums 2112 thru Hold Your Fire. I've got to say the '80s albums get more of a play than the '70s albums.
Hemispheres is my favorite '70s album. It's hard to choose from '80s. I like them all.
Signals is definately up there. It has unique sound/production. It would have sounded very futuristic in it's time.

If you like Kansas, check out Proto Kaw. The pre-Kansas line up of the early '70s back together after over 30 years headed by Kerry Livgren.

Dream Theatre: top albums Images and Words and Scenes from a Memory.

Just recently got into Spock's Beard. Very good stuff.
Heavily influenced by many of the classic '70s prog bands.
Long, complicated multi-instrumental epic songs and and not to heavy on the distorted guitar, just the way I like it.

Just Say YES!

Yes is far and away my favorite musical group. I love absolutely everything about them and their music.

Unsurprisingly, I'm fond of many of the other groups named here, and have a special place in my heart for Rush, because it was by playing along with Rush tapes that I learned how to play bass guitar back in '79.

The genre tends to get a somewhat negative rap these days, I think, but as far as I'm concerned, exploring beyond the boundaries of pop music conventions is where it's at.

Heck, a lot of what is considered "modern rock" is stuff that's just beginning to advance to where "prog rock" was in the '70s.

Can't complain though, because I love prog rock.

Tangerene Dream has been around forever, but Plastikman, Stereolab and Luna all 'feel' the same somehow. Spiritualized is another band which had that sound.

Then there's StGermain, a great NYC band...unique.

Others I like are The Verve, Mercury Rev, Suede, King Cobb Steelie, Pavement, Tom Waits, My Morning Jacket.

Just say YES, to YES..
I think I could listen to Starship Trooper over and over and over again..

Wait, I HAVE listened to it over and over.

So,

I recommend "Bands that contained Ronnie Montrose"

That would include The Edgar Winter Group, Montrose (with Sammy Hagar), and Gamma.

Of those three, I'm partial to Gamma, whose series of albums
were not only creatively named (Gamma 1, 2, 3, and 4) LOL.

But were beautifully layered with synth's, Just the right scruffy voiced singer.
Not to mention Montrose on the Axe
And even a Blues song about an astronaut!

Yes would have to be one of the most positive uplifting prog bands.
I suppose the name says it all.
While at the other end of the spectrum lies Van der Graaf Generator. Still very good in their dark and disturbed way.

Here's a top prog site I've come across in my online travels.
The best of seen.

A couple more faves:
Neil Morse (ex Spocks Beard) - Christian Progressive Rock. A fairly small musical genre I would presume. Never the less, very god music.

Renaissance- only heard 2 songs, but that was enough. Good stuff.

Magenta- 70's style prog is not dead.
