The South Polar Region holds 90 percent of Earth’s ice and 70 percent of the total fresh water on the planet, so any significant pace of melting there is important and could contribute to an already rising sea.
For now, the newly measured melting might seem like a small quantity. The loss of ice in Antarctica amounts to about 0.4 millimeters of global sea rise annually, with a margin of error of 0.2 millimeters, the study concludes.

I worry more about the rising temperature of the oceans causing release of methane ice on the sea floor. It could make big explosions all along the coasts.
or the decreased salinity killing off the majority of food fish species (tuna, mackerel, etc)
BTW- has anyone ever wondered if there is something scientifically important to the fact that healthy human blood has the same exact salt concentrations as the ocean.

I was unaware of frozen methane gas under the oceans.

posted by CreeWolf: This thread went from "ANTARCTICA MELTING" to "LET'S BLAME BUSH" really quick! What I don't understand is you've got hundreds of world leaders whose countries spew crap into the atmosphere all the time no doubt contributing to global warming, its always "Bush's fault" . . I love this forum . . the day I see a thread about Bigfoot Sightings and someone brings up there are no clear photos of him because of George Bush . . I suppose I'll have to give myself a break for a few days from this Forum:[Edited by Don W]
