Live post preview

Hi, i thought i'd share this. I had to write a limited bb code implementation for a forum on my company intranet and it kind of evolved into live preview where you could see how your post would look as you were typing.

After i finished i thought it'd be pretty cool to hack it about and make it work for ATS. So i did

It should take pretty much all of the bb codes that ATS supports (except maybe bulleted list, colors, and font styles)

You can click on the buttons to generate the code or you can type it straight in. Either way as you type the preview pain at the bottom displays the post of it would look when finished.

It's nothing special, and to be honest pretty useless as you can't actually post from it to ATS. Unless you want to type out your post them copy and past it into the ATS reply box. But then clicking the "preview" button on the page is probably a whole lot easier

Anyway i thought i'd share and see what people think

Wow! This is really really cool. If you're willin to share the code to ATS you should send it in to SkepticOverlord! It makes the Preview button completely redundant

As Sardion mentioned, it virtually eliminates the need for the "Preview" code/page. The current "preview" is performed server-side, increasing cpu calls, whereas your client-side "preview" would, not only free up significant server-side resources, also allow for a more "real time" preview, performed client-side[browser].

I guess the questions now are ... overall browser compliance? mutual BB code support? ... all of which can be accomodated.

Looks like it has the potential to be a WIN:WIN for both, Burgess!

John Bull 1: The spell checkers quite an interesting idea, i might have to look into that

Sardion2000: As far as i'm concerned anyone can have the code All anyone has to do to have it is to save the source of the page as an html file.

12m8keall2c: It should work with the latest releases of IE, Firefox and Opera. It could be recoded to make better use of the dom to give it better compatible for older versions. I guess it's biggest downfall would have to be the fact you need _javascript enabled. If you have it turned off it just plain wont work

Nice bit of DHTML there!

If SkepticOverlord does get it on here, I hope theres an on/off to it all together and on/off to it automatically doing it per downstroke. I'd like to have a link at the bottom of the text box to automatically preview it when you're done, instead of as you type per downstroke, because that can be annoying.

Technically it's on the up stroke but yeah i can see what you mean. It wouldn't be hard to implement i'll add it in when i get a second
