An Iranian delegation for talks on Russia’s proposal to set up a joint venture (JV) on its territory to enrich uranium for Iran’s nuclear power plants will arrive here on February 14.
The talks between the two sides will be held at the level of deputy heads of the National Security Councils, RIA Novosti news agency reported today quoting the official spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Hamid Reza Asefi.
Earlier, the Russian media had reported that talks on the joint venture would be held in Moscow on February 16.
Mr Asefi said Iran still did not view Russia's proposal negatively and would discuss it comprehensively, in Moscow.
The Russia-Iran talks come after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad threatened yesterday that Tehran may reconsider its position on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), if the West continued to use this agreement as a means of denying the country's right to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
''If the West continues to use NPT provisions to deprive Iran of its legal right to peaceful nuclear technology, the Iranian nation will change its position on the treaty,'' Mr Ahmadinejad said.
''Russia's proposal to Iran to enrich uranium on Russian soil remained on the negotiating table,'' Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov said.
''Russia spoke firmly for the strict observance of all norms of international law on nuclear non-proliferation,'' Mr Ivanov said.
The Russian offer has been seen as a compromise in the standoff between Iran and the West.
Iran said recently it saw no reason to accept Russia's proposal after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), decided to inform the UN Security Council about the Iranian nuclear issue.
The IAEA resolution also urged Iran to resume its moratorium on nuclear fuel research, to ratify an additional protocol to its agreement with the IAEA, and to allow the agency to clarify all aspects of its past nuclear activities.
