Cable modem speed sudden drop

Recently my Cable modem speed has dropped and dropped hard to dial up speed im talking about 48 kbps when I tested it online.

I checked for adware, spyware removed all I found checked for viruses and nothing. My computer runs fine while off line. Lately my modem has also been having problems even getting a connection.

What could be the cause of such a drop in connection speed?

You wouldnt happen to utilize any kind of wireless gear would you, becuase if so I would say theres a chance someone is sucking up your bandwidth through that. If thats not the problem can you outline all the hardware in the setup to give us geeks a better idea of where the problem could be?

One possible cause maybe you are in a busy neighborhood. The way cable modem works, bandwidth is shared in a network pool, if your neighbors are downloading alot of porn this will also affect your bandwidth. In some areas people are lucky enough to be alone on the wire and have all the bandwidth for themselves, in some other areas there's a bunch of download happy users slowing your own bandwidth down.

I dont use any wireless gear just a motorola sb5100 (surfboard) cable modem. Strangly its running alot better now I just tested the speed again and got a much better 202.4 kbps I tested a bunch of times before and didnt get close to that and things are general running smoother online now.

What ufia said makes sense I didnt know it works like that but from about 2-6pm it worked liked crap now at roughly 10pm its working better. I would never have thought the effects could be that drastic if thats indeed the problem in my case.

Does this happen with DSL users awell?

Also if thats the problem and I can expect such service during peak times that would suck. Is there anything the cable company (adelphia in my case) can do to fix such problems. I always heard alot of bad things about adelphia but until now never had any problems.

I have cable, and I have always tested higher than T1. The problem may be with your ISP, who I would make a call to, IMO.
I also have 4 comps online at the same time and broadband phone, with no lag.

The sharing of bandwidth can be neighborhood based often with cable networks, its one of the more common downsides. To a certain extend DSL is similar but I'm on a fairly loaded DSL network and my 1.5 mbit pipe cranks pretty much all the time, only once has it been overly slow and that was due to a virus (Welchia) clogging the network with crap traffic. The poster saying to contact the ISP is on the right path, get them involved and see if they can improve the situation, if not then I would say decide if you can live with the slowdowns or if its worth switching to a different provider/service type.

I've recently had the same problem but I do have a wireless connection. My connection to the internet slows and then sometimes just cuts off.

I clocked in today at a respectable 1346.1 kbps-1852 kbps. But when I first woke up my modem wasnt even getting a connection.

My ISP is AOL and I havent really had too many problems with AOL concerning connection speed until now. If I can keep this rate im getting this morning I will be happy. Man running at dial up speed is such a pain now ,I cant believe how long I was only on dial up and thought it was perfectly acceptable.

I think im outgrowing AOL though theres alot of other choices out there
