Soldier charged $700 for damaged body armor

A U.S. soldier, injured in Iraq, was told he wouldn't be discharged until he paid $700 for his body armor, which was damaged in the attack that injured him and apparently destroyed after it was removed from in.

A field medic tied a tourniquet around Rebrook’s right arm to stanch the bleeding from shrapnel wounds. Soldiers yanked off his blood-soaked body armor. He never saw it again.

This is a soldier who put his life on the line for very little pay and got injured in the line of duty. And it sounds like the military is accusing him of stealing body armor. I'd say it's far more likely it was removed from him by the medics who were trying to get to his injury...
