Not bad idea but its a bit 'Over The Top'. Its a bit like bringing a medieval knights helmet/motorbike helmet into service, Still a good idea though

Another question: How would they supposed to get Respirators/NBC Gear on?

I guess you could integrate it when it becomes sophistacted enough.

At the moment we Brits are trying out some new enhanced combar body armour (ECBA) in Iraq, which increases neck and upper arm protection. I tried it recently on my last tour. I hated it with a vengence, as did everyone else in my platoon. It was too heavy and hot for anything more than static duties, eg top cover on a snatch land rover. Wearing something like this thing over my face would be like hell on earth in the heats that we were fighting in. I believe that the only realistic application would be top cover.

You got any pics or links to the body armor that you Brits wear? Is it similar to what the U.S. Army and Marines have?

Not to mention, Im certain you heard about the politicians complained that soldiers are not adequately equipped with enough body armor and demand that the soldiers should be wearing more armor, Im certain you would diagree that the soldiers should dress more (side body armor 6 pds extra, as well as shoulder) to please the politicians for their own political gain that they care about the soldiers in front of the American people.

Practical concerns aside, imagine what the image of our troops this would convey to the enemy, perhaps they would be somewhat scared of faceless killers.
Like others have said before me, I'm sure that the main concern of the soldiers is the weight and heat issue associated with the hemets, not to mention visual and auditory impairment.

Having done missions in hot/humid climates I would have to say that the helmet would drive me insane. As it is now I try to ditch my helmet and just wear my bush cap whenever I can. ( my theory is if I am gonna get smoked then the helmet probably wont save me....the wife does not seem to agree..
) But doing a sweep of a building or driving in a convoy then I would have to say its pretty sweet. I know just wearing Gen III body armour can suck at times. Most of the time we take off the shoulder pads and neck piece just to make it more comfortable and give extra mobility.

This helmet also conciles the identity if the soldier if they were peace keeping it might intimidate the locals thus having a negatitive reaction.

you could make it one system nbc and face mask that could be removed aka the predator mask rather than the star wars stormtrooper ww1 german helmut + nbc mask combo. I had no problem wearing the m40 protective mask but then agian when doing what i did you tend to enjoy wearing it rather than being exposed.

Yes its true we are seeing a return to the protective gear of the dark ages not medivil era yet! When i was in 97-2001 i would say we protective gear equal to roman hard leather armour and moved much like it but right before i got out the troops started to get roman metal breast plates. Now are moving to the chain/ring mail era of armour.

I only see the future having fully faced helms when not keep peacing which I feel will happen less and less but sadly open war will fill the gap.

If they could temperature control the air of the mask to reduce the heat that would be a major break threw plus have the underwear of the soldier be like a astronaught's eva underwear which is water cool or a newer system so heat isnt a problem then look out for a boom in PAE Personal Armour Equipment.

You have to remember not all wars of the future will be fought in the sandbox...
Out here overheating is certainly not a problem (hey it's -25C outside, no matter what you wear you'll be freezing)

I've seen some industrial and airsoft masks with small fans, that run for ~5h with 2 aa cells, you could probably make it able to run for 24h with a single small LI battery... would eaase of the heat issue... NBC can easily be adapted to that mask and some protective eye wear/eye visor too

Thats indeed something to consider but when your clearing houses of possible enemy soldiers your not going to give a crap about your image to the local population. If the military had a suit that offered full body protection and massive increased survivability and had no ill issues on performance they would use it even if it made them look like evil lizard alien monsters.

I mean a 70 ton M1A2 rolling down the street is very intimidating, but that aint going to stop the military from using them if there is a need.

I really invison increased armoured soldiers being used as a sort of "Shock Troopers" much like SWAT compared to normal police. Swat members look very intimidating have concealed faces but it for a very good purpose. They are used in high threat situations and are much better armoured them normal police get better vest, shoulder, mask, helmets protection.

SWAT members also dont do public relations work for the force theres other people to handle that.

oh, if the US is the Empire, then there's no shortage of would-be rebels. Luckily, we've got the X-wings, not them.

I think I mentioned before that soldiers will look like robots to an onlooking public, and that isnt good for PA...

Im pretty sure those are images from the Tom Clancy game "Ghost Recon 2" He allows game makers alittle liberty when making his games but for the most part the weapons and equipment used are very real to life.

Nothing new here

If you mean looking for ways to increase survivability to threats faced in combat you would be right.

Medival knights didnt use armoured helmets because it was a symbol or intimidation tactic these used it because it worked and saved lives in combat. People back then had hundreds of years of experience making body armour designs that worked and worked very well.

Form follows function

Armour was also not dropped from history as some PR move it was dropped because it was made obsolete thanks to new weapons like the musket. We are now making advancments that allow more and more armour to serve a purpose in combat again. They materials and threats may be very different but the basic concept to protect vital area in combat is the same as it has been for thousands of years.
