Although Russia and the United States promised to reduce their deployed nuclear arsenals by about two-thirds over a decade under the Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty (SORT), Putin noted that the document also allows the signatories to keep significant reserves of such missiles.

"Russia is going to make the most of this treaty's provisions,"the president added.

OK, seems to make sence. But this is the part that just makes me go hmmmmmm....

The UR-100NUTTKH strategic missiles, which Putin mentioned, "are some of the most powerful, heavy missiles capable of carrying up to 10 nuclear warheads and defeating sophisticated missile defense systems," said Col. Gen. Yury Baluyevsky, first deputy commander with the Russian General Staff.

NATO assholes better watch out

english.pravda.ru...

MOSCOW (AP): A Defense Ministry document released Thursday emphasizes that Russia will have to make radical changes in its military reform plans -- including its nuclear strategy -- if NATO continues to exist in its present form.

Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said Russia would not rule out a pre-emptive attack anywhere in the world if Russia's interests demand it.

Both men emphasized the importance of Russia's nuclear arsenal as a cornerstone of the country's defense, with Putin announcing plans to pull dozens of SS-19 intercontinental ballistic missiles out of storage.

The US is not much better than Russia.

Just better, but not by much.

Ahhhhh yes........Let's flex the nuclear arm a bit before we let them all go back to rusting and deteriorating again.

More problems.....
Both Russia and the US are very well "clued in" on MAD...be assurd of that. Flexing the nuclear muscle every now and then is good for the "body"......

Posturing gentlemen, posturing....

The oxymoron that is Russias ministry of defense (more like offense, look at all the wars they are fighting now), always shows Russias true intent.

Why do these people bother?

Their system is second rate, the people starving, and most of them want out, yet Russia still dreams of controlling the world.

It never ends, the ambitions of totalitarian regimes.

What human could support such an insane system that they espouse?

But why does Russia need nukes?

To protect itself from what?

It's a poor country, who would want to invade it?

Even if the west did invade wouldn't you be better off in the long run?

What is the problem anyways?
