Here is what the Department does do...
1. Establishes policies relating to federal financial aid for education, administers distribution of those funds, and monitors their use.
2. Collects data and oversees research on America's schools and disseminates this information to educators and the general public.
3. Identifies the major issues and problems in education and focuses national attention on them.
4. Enforces federal statutes prohibiting discrimination in programs and activities receiving federal funds and ensures equal access to education for every individual.

In the end, I think forced income redistribution is not an idea that should be supported by Americans. In the end, we're all paying in some way and form for children to go to school that may or may not deserve it. Also, the organization does hit state-level education using the carrot-and-stick method: either follow our suggestions, or we won't redistribute anyone's income to you. It doesn't seem very fair, but hey, that's how a cleverly hidden socialist country works.

I agree we should not support this "redistribution", but as you mentioned it is "forced" by the Orginization that our very own Congress established, It does not seem like we have a choice in the matter...
What child does not "deserve" to to school?
What did you mean?
