Right if one was to remove all the sea sponges from the worlds oceans would the level go down! I guess it would unless those sponges where to be squeezed dry, then the level might go up!

Right carry on.

Maybe we can donate them to the french so they can learn some personal hygiene

I would assume that anything that has mass or displaces any volume whatsoever would cause the sea level to decrease even if all seawater was removed from it.

Why the ruminations regarding sponges?

That might be the true reason for the lower levels.
Toxic spills and oil polution in the waters has been proven to kill natural sponge. Entire sponge collectives have been eradicated and are now nearly endangered.

So it must be the lack of sponges, to hold the water in the ocean that is causeing sea level to go down.

Chew on that.

i have a general interest question, if you punched a hole through panama instead of using locks, are the sea levels the same or would there be a huge waterfall or river full of rapids dropping to either side? i think i remember reading that the sea levels are not the same on both sides of the panamanian isthmus, anyone care to clarify for me why this is? i just dont get it...

I'd have though sea level was the same all around the world as it's well as it's sea level. But then again a nice big water fall would look cool.
