The Israeli defence minister has stated that his country has the right to defend itself, and as such is 'preparing'. His statement comes as the IAEA prepares to meet on 2 February concerning a possible referral of Iran to the UN Security Council over it's nuclear programme.

The Israeli defence minister has warned that the country will not accept an Iranian nuclear capability.

Shaul Mofaz said that at this stage his government gave priority to diplomatic action aimed at convincing Iran to give up its nuclear programme.

But he added that Israel was preparing for any eventuality and had the "capability to defend itself", after Iran resumed nuclear research.

The 'good news' here is that Israel at present appears to be giving the diplomats a chance to defuse the situation; this presumably means their analysis is that there is no clear and present danger in them in the near future.

This however seems to be the Israeli way of reminding the IAEA and UN that if the international community doesn't do something over Ahmadinejad's nuclear ambitions, then they reserve the right to do so.

Despite previous statements that they would not act unilaterally, the Israelis seem to be signalling to the international community that an Iranian nuclear option is not going to happen - one way or the other.
