News coming from Tehran that Iran is about to resume nuclear research program despite warnings from US.

Iran to resume nuclear research programme

Iran plans to resume the nuclear fuel research more than two years after it was suspended.

The United States and the European Union have expressed fears that Tehran wants to produce atomic fuel to build bombs, and the research was stopped in October 2003 after discussions between all three parties.

Mohammed Saeedi, deputy head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, has informed the United Nations nuclear watchdog in writing that the research will resume soon and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will monitor the programme.

Saeedi said: "Within the next few days we will start researching that field in co-operation and co-ordination with the IAEA."

There have also been strong hints by Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi that Tehran planned to reject a Russian compromise proposal aimed at defusing Iran's nuclear row with the West.

Asefi said a proposed joint venture to enrich uranium in Russia was only acceptable if it was in addition to enrichment facilities in Iran.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Tuesday warned Iran against resuming atomic fuel research and development which it said would further Tehran's efforts to build nuclear bombs.

"If Iran takes any further enrichment-related steps, the international community will have to consider additional measures to restrain Iran's nuclear ambitions," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

The United States suspects research and development work that Tehran said would restart on January 9 could help what Washington believes is its pursuit of a nuclear bomb, he told reporters.

The talks between iran and eu 3 resumed last month, and both are due to meet again this month, just wondering if the latest decision by tehran will put an end to the negotiations?

I personally don't think the russian deal would stop iranians from pursuing a nuclear program.

It's funny how US cannot do a thing about iranian nuke program, her hands are full with iraq, Iraq is just a mess, new iraqi government has very close ties with iran. US is losing Iraq to iran. Iranians are pushing for a quick US withdrawal, with US desperate to have a few bases built in iraq, and keep some troops there. I guess we might see a compromise coming. US troops remaining in Iraq for iran attaining complete nuclear cycle.

Any thoughts?
