nice good choice... you can design your tank pretty much however you want then. May I suggest though getting Cardinal tetras instead of neon tetras? They have the same color scheme but are much brighter.

Nice set up!

If you like a "saltwater feel" to a freshwater set up, might I suggest neolamprologus brichardi(s).

My dad's got a set up with them breeding, along with guppies, bushy nose plecostomus, and others.

They seem hearty and easy to care for.

Not sure of the agression of neons, but the brichardi seem to get along well enough with the guppies (roughly similar size to neons) even though they are much bigger.

the brichardis are considered tanginikan african cichlids. They are awesome fish but have a completely different water pH, hardness, and diet.

Will not work with tetras.

Angel fish are always a good option, they are beautiful fish and can be put with neons

I took out two of the undergravels and I put in the drift wood. It looks odd with nothing else in teh tank. I put up a black background to give the tank more depth and added some darker rocks to the mix. Im goign for a swampy/ amazon sorta look. Im hoping that the wood will begin to oxidize with the water and create some Tanic acid that will yellow the water giving it a more realistic look. This picture has the 4 filters in but I just removed two a few min ago. I really feel that If I do a good job planting some sea grases in the tank it shall come out great.


I may have to remove all of the gravel in order to place some silver sand to have a good meidum for the plants to grow. IM not sure I must read some more into it.

... but you do know driftwood will mess with the pH of your tank right?

OK Ok I am done decorating. I will wait about 3-4 days before I put my first fish in it.

I know I went with plastic plants. The wood is real. I boiled each peice for 15 min in a big Gumbo pot (yes Im aware that people outside of LA have no idea what a gumbo pot is) I did this to release any tanic acid that the wood would contain so that way It wouldnt stain my tank too much.

So even with the plastic plants how do you guys think it looks?

Coming very late to the discussion...how goes the tank?

I've had a 4' 55gal tank for about 6 years now, upgraded from a 29 when my tiger oscars had to start 3-point maneuvers just to turn around. I built the wooden stand myself out of 4x4 posts and 2x4 frames. The thing's so sturdy it could withstand a tornado. The oscars have since died, and I've converted the tank into something much more community-oriented. I have a few gouramis, a few rainbow sharks, and several tiger barbs, with a pleco and Chinese algae eater working on the cleanup crew.

I'm guessing you spent more than your $200 budget on setup? That's always the most expensive part, but you've got a kicka$$ filter which is going to last you a long time.

BTW, I do know what a gumbo pot is...lol

I've had fresh, brackish and salt water tanks over the years, its a great hobby if you've got the time.

I would keep the old tank and use it to qurantine any new fish for when you've stocked your main tank, this stops any diseses getting in to your setup.

When it comes to stocking the tank I would go for a mix, bottom feeders, top feeders and a shoal of tetras or similar so theres action in all areas of the tank!!

Get a catfish like this one:


My fish was exactly like the one on this picture, except mine was more black

They look cool

They help keep the tank clean

They don't eat other fish in the tank (mine didn't...)

They can be very old (my fish was +20 years old)

plecos are kinda cool looking but they really just sit there.

get some tinfoil barbs. they swim around and give some movement

I also have aquariums and tropical fish. This is a great place to glean info.

just get an iguana. i got one, feed it right tills hes about 2 feet long an let him run around tthe house, train him to poo on newspaper with hay layed on it in the bathroom.

if you get a smart one u wont have to feed it, because smalls bits of food have been going missing out of the fridge an i have a small suspicion is my stanley
