hidden unemployment?

I'm wondering if all the unemployed people are being counted in the statistics. Last time I applied for unemployment benefits, you had to be working at least a year at the previous employment to receive them. I didn't have that much steady employment, so I did not recieve them. But if I was not qualified to receive them, I may not have been counted among the unemployed, even though I was fired. I'm not sure all the unemployed are being counted.
