The 2nd dimension is already part of our universe - just as the 4th dimension is. Both are the same thing. The reason that it exists is that we are
constantly moving through it, and it's the connection that the 2-d universe has with our 3-d universe that allows us to percieve depth and
distance.
But, as said, you're trying to correlate 3-dimensional properties to things that don't have said properties. A shadow is a perfect example of
something that's 2-dimensional. It has no height, no mass, but it exists. If you were to look at the shadow from a directly 2-dimensional angle, you
would not see it.
Now, as for the 4th dimension - it's not something that's whimsical or spiritual (although it may affect us on a spiritual level if our spirit
exists on the 4th dimensional plane). The 4th dimension is Space-Time, it's what Einstein wrote about. Mass affects the 4th dimension to give the
illusion of gravity. When you throw a baseball straight forward, it's not that it is "pulled" down by gravity, but that the path of the ball is
warped by space so that the ground becomes what's "in front" of the ball instead of just more air.
I hope this helps explain things for you.
