2nd dimension??

A lot of people on ATS lately gone on about there being other dimensions.
Now im not sure about 4th(although i really doubt it,) but wouldnt it be completly impssible for there to be a 2 dimensional universe.
Every particle no matter how small will have a mass, shape and size no matter how small it is there is no way a particle could be 2d so there cannot be a 2d dimension.

I cant see a 2 dimension anything because for it to have width and height, it has to have some depth (z axis). Even pixels on your screen do. I think higher is possible but at least 3 is needed for the physical universe.

That's because you are discribing 2d objects of existing in our 3d universe. Am i missing something here?

The 2nd dimension is already part of our universe - just as the 4th dimension is. Both are the same thing. The reason that it exists is that we are constantly moving through it, and it's the connection that the 2-d universe has with our 3-d universe that allows us to percieve depth and distance.

But, as said, you're trying to correlate 3-dimensional properties to things that don't have said properties. A shadow is a perfect example of something that's 2-dimensional. It has no height, no mass, but it exists. If you were to look at the shadow from a directly 2-dimensional angle, you would not see it.

Now, as for the 4th dimension - it's not something that's whimsical or spiritual (although it may affect us on a spiritual level if our spirit exists on the 4th dimensional plane). The 4th dimension is Space-Time, it's what Einstein wrote about. Mass affects the 4th dimension to give the illusion of gravity. When you throw a baseball straight forward, it's not that it is "pulled" down by gravity, but that the path of the ball is warped by space so that the ground becomes what's "in front" of the ball instead of just more air.

It's a pretty amusing description of a 2-dimensional society, the main character is visited by a sphere from 3-space (seen to him as a circle of varying size) and the adventures thereof. But along with being pretty snarky social comentary, it's also an excellent primer on the relations between the dimensions - far better probably than anything you could describe on a forum...
