McGraw was born in Vinita, Oklahoma and spent most of his childhood in both Oklahoma and Texas. His father was an equipment supplier for oil drilling who left his job to pursue his Ph.D. in psychology. McGraw won a football scholarship and played as a linebacker for the University of Tulsa, but when he was injured he quit and transferred to Midwestern State University. He graduated with a B.A. in psychology in 1975, and went on to get his Ph.D. from the University of North Texas in 1979.
McGraw spent the next decade working with his father as a therapist. In 1988, he was publicly reprimanded by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists for having an "inappropriate dual relationship" in employing a 19-year-old female former client. In 1989 with attorney Gary Dobbs he formed Courtroom Sciences, Inc., a consulting firm to provide assistance with courtroom trials. When Oprah Winfrey was sued by Texas cattle ranchers for defamation in 1996, her attorney hired CSI.
Winfrey was impressed with McGraw and in 1998 he began appearing weekly on her show as a "Relationship and Life Strategy Expert". In 2002, he was given his own syndicated daily TV show, Dr. Phil, produced by Winfrey's Harpo Studios. The format is an advice show, where he tackles a different topic on each show, offering advice for his guests' troubles. McGraw has authored a number of self-help books on topics such as relationships and weight loss.

I dont know if its just me, but isn't Dr. Phill a pretty creepy guy? I cant stand his self rightous declerations of help. He doesn't help you, he tells you that he IS helping you. And why did he get his own show? And why are they showing it on Public Access? And why did he get divorced recently?
And why does my mother watch Oprah all the time? I actually dont mind Orpah, Its just that when she has these self help people on her show, like Phill, then all of a sudden I have to eat that rice with the sticks and leaves and grains and stuff in it, and we have to talk about why I spend alot of time in my room plugged into earphones and we have to talk about how I'm REALLY feeling. What the hell? These self-help people arent helping me much.
But besides that, he's so aggressive, and unwavering, like one of those priests that is always shouting JEEEEESUS! (Note the tremelo on the EEEEE). But instead its like PROOOOZAC! (Note the tremelo on the OOOO).
I am glad for people that do find genuine help from the guy, and Im sure there are those (well, kinda sure), but the guy just creeps me out.

I've caught some of Doctor Phil's show and I have an idea about why people watch it. Its not really what he is telling these people because as you all have just mentioned, its mostly common knowledge stuff but I think the real draw is that the guest seem to need to be told this and we all feel superior to the poor stupid people who don't even know there's something wrong with (insert obvious stupid act here).
All I could keep think is that these people have to be actors following a script because nobody is that stupid...are they?
