About fifteen years ago a friend loaned me a copy of "The Gypsy's Curse", it was the start of a major obsession for me. I was a country boy who had
just moved to the city and I felt very alienated. Crews' work was like an old friend come to stay. Despite being an Australian his work called to me
(I guess thats because I come from Queensland, and as all Australians know our Deep South is in our Far North). It reminded me of the characters and
rough living that I enjoyed so much.
I went on to collect nearly all of his work (I don't have "2 by Crews"), sometimes paying handsomely for it (Damn Abebooks). I have probably read
each of his books four times over, at least.
Reading Crews led me to read Flannery O'Connor and she just blew me away!
It's so hard to pick a favourite novel by Crews but I guess that "The Gypsy's Curse" is still special to me.
Apparently a film version of his novel "The Hawk is Dying" is in post-production now. I really hope they can do it justice.
Are there any other Crews fans out there?
