Secret cia planes in Portugal?

Christ !!....this is on the front cover of the 'Portugal News' newspaper!!

i'll have to type it out for you because theres nothing i can find on the web

the portuguese goverment was under fire this week after a second report in the spce of a week claiming that secret CIA planes are using portuguese airports as stopover points while commutting terrorists to unknown destinations.

does anyone else have info on this???

I wouldnt be surprised as CIA 737s as well as other types such as Dash-8 have been spotted a quite a few European airports.The picture below shows a 737 that kicked up a stir up here when it came to refuel at Glasgow airport.The link below also gives a bit of background to some of the destinations it has visited recently.Airliners.net forum posters have also posted about C130 and Dash-8 aircraft that have also been used to "allegedly" transport suspected terrorists around.

It's popping up all over the place. A number of nations - in Europe and elsewhere are starting to deny access to facilities in their country to CIA aircraft transferring suspects to interrogation facilities - many of them reportedly in Eastern Europe.

The Portuguese press is all abuzz over this as well. It looks like some politicians there want Paulo Portas, the former Defense Minister, to clarify what may have happened. My Portuguese language skills are quite abysmal but here is a partial translation of a Correio de Manha article:

Jorge Machado, of the PP party, identified via the internet a Boeing 737-7ET, with registration number N4476S, photographed in the airport at Santa Maria on April 14, 2005, as well as a Learjet plane (registration number N221SG), also photographed at the same airport on August 12.

Focus magazine's report recorded a "Gulfstream IV with registration N227SV" in Tires. Freitas and Amado have denied the existance of secret flights in Portugal.

And another Correio de Manha article:

An airplane used by the American intelligence agency (CIA) to transport terrorism suspects landed last April in the Francisco Sa Carneiro airport, in Porto, which if proven would be in contradiction to the denials given by the government concerning the landing of these types of flights in Portugal.

According to a report in Thursday's "Jornal de Noticias", there are photographs which prove the existance of CIA planes in our country to transport suspected terrorists to illegal detention centers in Europe and Asia. As proof, the newspaper printed a photograph of a Boeing 737-7ET BBJ, registration number N4476S, landing at Sa Carneiro airport on April 17, 2005.

This report by the JN appears one day after Focus magazine reported on CIA planes transporting suspected terrorists to Portuguese airports before the current government, on March 12, contradicted the statements given by the Foreign Minister, Freitas do Amaral, who denied the reports.

This follows an earlier statement by the Foreign Ministry that no CIA planes had landed in Portugal "with the authorization or knowledge of the Portuguese government".

In Portugal, two political parties demanded an explanation from the government yesterday after a media report claimed two planes used by the CIA landed at two of its airports.

The weekly Focus reported that a Gulfstream jet and a Boeing 737-700, which it said had in the past been used by the CIA, were photographed at an international airport in Porto, northern Portugal, and at Tires, an airport near Lisbon. The report did not say when the planes landed.

In Holland some government agency said that they were not happy about the cia planes landing here, and that some terrorists will end up in camps in Poland, and some other east-european countries. It was on the news last week and some party didnt want the planes to land here blablabla. I will search it up for you guys, dont know if i can find it, but i will try!!!

Seekerof - quoting Fox news is like asking Dick Cheney what he wants us to believe...

I am sure that we aren't talking about 'large scale' detention - that would actually be counterproductive. Evaluating captured suspect terrorists for possible humint and shipping them off to an interrogation facility beyond the reach of the press could be useful. Sending scores of them off is not feasible or desirable for a number of reasons. THere have been far too many stories from far too many nations to discard the possibility that this is happing.

shantyman - Fox news is one of the few good news channels out there. Or is it just not "left" enough for you? I'm sure you'll stick to the completely unbiased news agencies like washington times & post, and new york times, and CNN.
